As a native born Virginian (before moving to Pennsylvania because of job), I think that I'm qualified to say that Gilmore was a complete disaster as governor. He got elected on an "Anti-Car Tax" platform, and then tried to weasel out of his promises once he got elected. He pretty much mismanaged the entire Commonwealth during his tenure and no one was sorry to see him go after his term was up.

He may be "right" on the issues today, but most Virginians are not going to be so forgiving, based upon his prior performance as governor. That's what makes him weak.

But the question remains, who would you consider a strong GOP nominee to face Warner ? We don’t have a superstar heir apparent as we did with George Allen taking on Robb in 2000.

I still am appaled at a complete campaign run on “no car tax” right before tax season. Thats pretty shallow with the many “real” issues which needed attention at that time. I will support Gilmore but I think it’s Warner’s to lose.
