Red, green lights to be banned?

A special task force in a Colorado city has recommended banning red and green lights at the Christmas holiday because they fall among the items that are too religious for the city to sponsor.

"Some symbols, even though the Supreme Court has declared that in many contexts they are secular symbols, often still send a message to some members of the community that they and their traditions are not valued and not wanted. We don't want to send that message," Seth Anthony, a spokesman for the committee, told the Fort Collins, Colo., Coloradoan.

He said the recommended language does not specifically address Christmas trees by name, but the consensus was that they would not fall within acceptable decorations.

What will be allowed are white lights and "secular" symbols not associated "with any particular holiday" such as icicles, unadorned greenery and snowflakes, the task force said.

The group was made up of members of the city's business and religious communities as well as representatives from some community groups. Members met for months to review the existing holiday display policy, which allowed white as well as multi-colored lights and wreaths and garlands.

In previous years, there also was a Christmas tree at the city's Oak Street Plaza.

A vote on the proposal will be coming up before the city council on Nov. 20, officials said.

"As far as I'm concerned, the group ended up in a very fair place in which primarily secular symbols will be used on city property," task force member Saul Hopper told the newspaper.

The existing holiday display rules were adopted in 2006 after a rabbi requested that the city display a menorah.

I can’t believe they vote these idiots in year after year. You would think the people would be so embarrassed after seeing this in the national news that they would hide their heads in shame.

The natural question here is : are they going to ban traffic signals?

LOL - we'll be left with nothing but flashing yellows everywhere...

I'd have to wear red and green everyday during the nondescript holiday season.

Next to be banned - the word 'holiday', lest it evoke something offensive...

I have a vague recollection of an arcane piece of trivia that at one time, those of the Hibernian persuasion in Syracuse, NY managed to get the green light on top, and the red on the bottom, of traffic control signals.

I can remember driving down Van Nuys Blvd fifty-some-odd years ago and seeing all the Christmas decorations hanging over the Boulevard. Red, Green, and Silver. It is an American tradition and should not be treaded on by anyone with hate or anyone that can not assimilate into our American culture.

What pagan death cult celebration are you talking about? Not Chanukah, I hope!

I thought the reference to the Menorah was sufficiently clear, but, no, I wasn't talking about the Festival of Lights.

speaking of today being election day. I always refuse those "I voted" stickers.

That way when people at work who have them on ask me if I voted I reply, no, not allowed to. They ask why. Convicted felon I tell them.

The funny part is they don't know to believe me or not.

Some mental institution is apparently missing a few patients.

Good grief.

"Some symbols ..often still send a message to some members of the community that they and their traditions are not valued and not wanted."

Anyone who get such a message from traffic light colors is psychotic. No exaggeration.

I predict slaughter at major intersections, but maybe that’s not all bad, could kill off a few of those stupid enough to live in a place where personal freedom and common sense has been banned.

Another argument - green is OK because we want to display our commitment to the environment and to policies that reduce our footprint on nature. Red shows our solidarity with the working class and our resolute support of the vanguard of the proletariat. Think they will buy it?

Before, or after their heads exploded?...

Sorry, I was reading quickly and didn’t catch your mentioning the Menorah. What’s the pagan death cult celebration, then?

The lights make it just beautiful. The libs want ‘always winter, never Christmas.’ Kind of reverting to the Puritan’s NON-celebration of Christmas. Perhaps they should wear gray.

What colors does that leave? Blue, yellow, white, orange, purple.

Ugh! What a combination.
