H1Bs in US Prez campaign (Romney pushes for more)

WASHINGTON: A leading Republican Presidential hopeful has thrown his weight behind the H1B visa programme stressing that bringing high skilled workers on a permanent basis to the US will be beneficial to the economy.

Former Massachusetts Gover Mitt Romney has said that while he is in favour of increasing the quota for H1B visa, a majority of whose aspirants are Indians, the exact figures would depend on a number of things including the strength of the US economy and the implications for the local workforce.

“I like H1B visas. I like the idea of the best and brightest in the world coming here. I'd rather have them come here permanently rather than come and go, but I believe our visa programme is designed to help us solve gaps in our employment pool,” he said in an interview to TechCrunch,a weblog.

“Where there are individuals who have skills that we do not have in abundance here, I'd like to bring them here and contribute to our economy,” he added.

The Republican contended that in the “competitive” global environment, the US would stay the most powerful nation in the world only with superior technology and innovation.

“And if we need additional folks who have skills that can contribute to our country then by all means lets welcome them in and if we see that our kids are not competing in certain areas, lets help them understand what they need to become competitive,” he added.

Romney was asked if the H1B quota should be increased, there should be no quota at all or if the United States should let in everyone who is qualified.

Romney said the US needed “more H1B visas, not less”, but the exact number would follow a review of a number of things on regular basis.

These are “What's the overall economy doing? What's happening to the size of our workforce... what's happening to our own capacity in the jobs that are being requested...what are the demands from our employers,” he said.

Romney also said that while American has to compete globally, it would have to get serious with a country like China on the issue of intellectual property rights.

“The only way America is going to remain the worlds superpower is if we can compete globally, so I want to open more markets to our goods and I will negotiate with other nations to do so. At the same time I want to make sure that our trading with other nations is done on a fair basis.”

“When a nation like China does not honour our intellectual property rights then we're going to get serious with our Chinese friends and say guys you just can’t do that or you are going to suffer consequences in our markets,” said the Republican aspirant for contesting the Presidential elections ne

No thanks, Romney.

We’ve been talking about the H1B scams for about a decade, with only one candidate listening: Duncan Hunter.

What an absolute dumbass. Has he learned NOTHING in the last few months about Americans being SICK of immigration? I don't care if these would be "legal." Until we deport all the illegals and find out just who is in America, we don't need ANY MORE immigrants! We have a LOT of Americans out of work, thanks to globalist traitors like him. NO THANKS! I will NEVER vote for him now! NEVER! I knew he would show his true colors. He's a globalist. I better stop before I say how I REALLY feel about him.... ;o)

Well I'm a high-tech worker and it is very popular with me. There's a very large difference to me in bringing in low skilled labor to compete with those without options and what H1-B does. I've worked for a few companies founded by immigrants (like Sun in the good days - see Vinod Khosla. I view letting in high end labor and venture capitalists without limit - in my view they make jobs more than they take them. Seal the borders but import all the smarties we can get our hands on.

"...import all the smarties we can get our hands on..."

I'm old enough to remember Indira Ghandi telling the US, "You're creating a brain-drain in India"!

Ted Kennedy fixed that!

I agree with you Sick1. I’ve worked in the tech/strategy world for quite a while and it’s depressing how difficult it is to find qualified people. Bring in the brains, let them embrace the American dream -it’s a win-win for us in the short term and in the long term.

We need a POTUS that will reduce the number H1B’s and encourage our own lazy kids to get off their duffs and get a good science, engineering, or computer degree, instead of majoring in fluff courses.

“...encourage our own lazy kids to get off their duffs and get a good science, engineering, or computer degree, instead of majoring in fluff courses...”

And how do you intend to accomplish that? I’m just curious. Why would someone in their right mind choose to sweat to get this chemical engineering or computer science degree, when it is so much easier to do some Liberal Arts Major, or History Major or some other liberal non-sense studies major? Mom and Dad paid for the college, bought a nice car - now it’s time to party!

Afterwards, this little screwed up kid with no real life experience will go work for some drive-by media, or will get yet another useless degree or, worst, start teaching others in some university. And then everybody
wonders what went wrong with 50% of the country?
