Beshear. Wow, it’s like Kentucky is in a time warp. It’s 1987 all over again. I had a lot of sympathy for Fletcher, but we should’ve nominated someone else.
According to the KY SOS site, only 36.7% voted in this race. How can we win with that kind of apathy?
And since it’s 1987 all over again, will Martha Layne Collins be around to hand the keys to the Gov’s office to Beshear ?
Wasn’t Ernie Fletcher a corrupt RINO? Sounds like the could have gotten someone better to run...
The three isolated cases of one-term Republican governors were Simeon S. Willis 1943-1947, Louie Nunn 1967-1971, and Ernie Fletcher, 2003-2007. At this rate we won't have another GOP governor til 2035 or so. :-O
Of course it helps that Steve Beshear is a party hack who got the nod simply because it was his turn, but I don't think he will be the Dem nominee next time around. He was just there for the name recongition and is a seat warmer til the Dem can groom a star candidate.
I don't think we're in any danger of Kentucky going RAT on the national level though. Dan Mongiardo only came close to beating Jim Bunning last time because Bunning ran the worst campaign possible and kept shooting himself in the foot.
Kentucky should stay in the GOP column for President unless the Dems have a really smooth-talking Slick Willie type on the ticket who polls well in the rural hearthand (John Edwards on steroids), or if the GOP runs a truly awful candidate who alienates the entire electorate (i.e. Ron Paul)
And with the GOP nominee taking Kentucky, I doubt many people will split their ticket to elect a RAT Senator.
No. Fletcher was only guilty of wanting to (gasp !) hire Republican state workers to jobs ludicrously overrepresented by rodents. He was the successful victim of a smear-job by the outgoing rodent AG. A coup d’etat.
Until Paul Patton, and aside from the earliest time after statehood, Governors were only permitted a single term and couldn’t run for reelection.
It was Beshear’s turn in 1987, not 2007. If we still had the one-term limit, we’d have been behind Steve Pence. Pence had an ugly split with the Governor and didn’t run this time.
Growing up in TN, I think part of the reason is tradition, which dies hard. Also, southern Rats as a rule don't come off as raving lunatics like Rats in other parts of the country, especially on social issues.
You are so very right.
I didn’t look at the results for those, but they were probably about the same.
Gov race had the highest turnout (1,055,000). Sec State next (GOP grayson won) — 1,011,000.
With approximately 55% of the vote in,
Secretary of State Trey Grayson has 57% and state Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer has 64%. It’s not a total loss.
“28% reporting at 7:23PM.
Beshear - D @ 62%
Fletcher - R @ 38%”
Nail biter so far.
