In a defeat for embryonic stem cell research proponents, New Jersey voters rejected a ballot measure Tuesday that would have forced taxpayers to spend $450 million on the destructive research. Pro-life groups campaigned against the proposal because it would also have funded human cloning experiments. Residents of the northeastern state defeated Public Question # 2 with 53 percent of the vote coming in against it.
Marie Tasy, the head of New Jersey Right to Life, told LifeNews.com the result is a major defeat for Governor Jon Corzine, who personally campaigned for this Question and contributed $200,000 to a shadow group which ran radio ads and made phone calls featuring Michael J. Fox.

This is an important victory against bad medicine. Also, Jon Corzine got a kick in the pants.
Sweet victory...must be savored...don't get much of it here in NJ.
Sorry to hear that, but you know, the way NJ always gets knocked, it’s kinda nice to see our folks doing a better job than TEXAS on an issue. Woo-hoo! See?? There ARE plenty of good ppl in NJ :-)
Just goes to show that whatever the liberal-enslaved MSM says, the majority is not in agreement.
A pleasant surprise from the Garden State.
Very true. Still, this result wasn’t expected in New Jersey.
A vote against taxes not for life, but I’ll take it.
It probably came down to the people of NJ wanting the $450 million to be spent on something a little more worthwhile...like education, etc.
I think on this sort of thing the conservatives are more motivated. NJ is much bluer in statewide races than in local races. There were no statewide races. So DEM turnout was prolly low. Just a guess. In my county, it was a 70-30 GOP sweep of senate and assembly, county clerk, dog catcher, meter maid, you get the idea. Plus there was an excellent statewide campaign against the ballot questions.
Nope. It came down to conservative NJers rejecting the expenditure. Period.
WOW!! Did New Jersey take a “right” turn??
“It came down to conservative NJers rejecting the expenditure.”
I highly doubt 53% of the NJ population is conservative. You had others in there who rejected it for other reasons.
How can you tell the difference? I think that probably NJ’s large Catholic population turned out, and was most likely motivated by life issues as much as by taxes. Myself? I was voting against gubmint spending. But I think life played a role as well. Funny how ppl gotta try to dis NJ even when things go right.
It’s not 53% of the population. It’s 53% of the people who voted yesterday. I believe DEM turnout was low, probably because there were no statewide races. Just local ones. In my county, the GOP won everything 70%-30%. You don’t know what yer talking about.
We had a pretty good day yesterday.
Here’s a piece in the lib rag star ledger which demonstrates that LIFE was an issue.

Now y’all quit hatin’ on NJ. We won.
It appears that the 2006 anti-conservative trend in the northern states is receeding.
Thank you New Jersey!
