Founder's Quotes - Sam Adams on the deadly loss of virtue
The Patriot Post, other sources` ^ | 11/9/2007 | Samuel Adams

Posted on 11/09/2007 6:58:13 AM PST by Loud Mime

“A general dissolution of principles and manners will more surely overthrow the liberties of America than the whole force of the common enemy. While the people are virtuous they cannot be subdued; but when once they lose their virtue then will be ready to surrender their liberties to the first external or internal invader.”
Samuel Adams letter to James Warren, February 12, 1779

“Here comes the orator! With his flood of words, and his drop of reason.”
Benjamin Franklin

“Gentlemen, you will permit me to put on my spectacles, for, I have grown not only gray, but almost blind in the service of my country.”
George Washington (upon fumbling for his glasses before delivering the Newburgh Address, 15 March 1783)

“But the safety of the people of America against dangers from foreign force depends not only on their forbearing to give just causes of war to other nations, but also on their placing and continuing themselves in such a situation as not to invite hostility or insult; for it need not be observed that there are pretended as well as just causes of war.”
John Jay Federalist No. 4
This quote is timely. When we have former members of the Executive (Carter, Clinton and Gore) going abroad to criticize our country they are inviting hostilities and insults from all corners of politics.

Others:

“Men will always be mad, and those who think they can cure them are the maddest of all.”
Voltaire

“All propaganda is lies—even when it is telling the truth.”
George Orwell

“It is only the warlike power of a civilized people that can give peace to the world.”
Theodore Roosevelt

“The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing. If you can fake that, you’ve got it made.” —
Groucho Marx

“Man has such a predilection for systems and abstract deductions that he is ready to distort the truth intentionally, he is ready to deny the evidence of his senses only to justify his logic”
Fyodor Dostoyevsky
This is the heart of liberalism!

I really find that quote valid, but the liberal will redefine this part: deny the evidence of his senses

When Dostoyevsky used the word "senses", he obviously had reason in mind; common sense. I believe that a liberal would not see it that way; which revalidates the quote.

Correct. This is where the emotionalism comes in on the Liberal side of things.

I was thinking about something the other day, that we label people with these titles like Liberal or Conservative, and that to some great extent the terms are incorrectly applied.

Real Conservatives are liberal about many things, in fact they aren’t “intolerant” either. They are opinionated, but they wish follow the old adage, “live and let live” for the most part.

Liberals on the other hand are extremely ‘intolerant’ on many things, and want to control others’ lives, and even thinking. They do this to the point of re-defining the very words that people use.

Yes, COMMON SENSE, and thinking are what he was referring to.

I’ve been working on this subject for months; I’ll have the chapter done by the end of this month.

Actually it’s an analysis of liberal v conservative thought processes and left v. right. My test readers love it...so far.
