I don’t quite know what to make of this. One wants to jump to conclusions that this was some sort of co-ordinated effort to gain access to possible nuclear materials or plans. But on the other hand, South Africa is a place where police stations get robbed, so it may just purely be a case of robbers rather opportunistically trying to rob the night employees at an out-of-the-way location.
The South African government would want to keep something like this quiet to prevent them from losing the 2010 soccer world cup.
What if they were the guards, and were going in to sexually assault the female operator?
Interesting comments.
So they somehow broke in, fought with the guy in the control room, then... what?
I think maybe he made up that bit about worrying about his girlfriend’s safety, because he wanted a plausible excuse for being there. Actually, he was there off shift simply because he wanted to be with his girlfriend.
No one would expect this kind of attack on a secure facility with armed guards, so there was no reason for him to bring a weapon. That wasn’t his job.
His resistance was heroic. It sounds as if the intruders planned carefully and knew exactly what they were doing. If he hadn’t been there, his girlfriend might have been killed, and the intruders might have had the necessary knowledge to blow the plant.
Pretty damned brave to tackle several intruders like that. It’s a good thing he did.
But hey, at least they’ve got racial majority rule...
