Hispanics to hear from GOP
The Washington Times ^ | November 10, 2007 | Stephen Dinan

The top Republican presidential candidates reversed course and have agreed to take part in a Spanish-language debate next month aimed at Hispanic voters, setting up an acrimonious clash over illegal aliens, an issue roiling the Republican primary.

Fred Thompson agreed Thursday to the debate, igniting a dash to sign up by former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, former New York Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee. Sen. John McCain of Arizona already had accepted the debate, to be broadcast by Univision, the country's largest Spanish-language television network.

It comes even as Mr. Thompson and Mr. Romney are sparring over who takes the toughest line on illegal entry, with Mr. Romney releasing a new television commercial yesterday laying out his...

--snip--

He is trying to drive daylight between himself and Mr. Giuliani, who as mayor of New York defended that city's sanctuary policy that helped shield illegal aliens from detection, and also taking aim at Democrats, particularly Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, who have embraced services such as driver's licenses for illegal aliens.

Mr. Romney is battling Mr. Thompson to see who has the most detailed, enforcement-oriented strategy. Mr. Thompson's plan is based explicitly on a policy of attrition — enforcing the laws to make it so difficult for illegal aliens to live here that they will return home voluntarily.

This week, Mr. Thompson went further, endorsing a plan sponsored by Rep. Steve King, Iowa Republican, that would use the IRS to punish companies that hire illegal aliens. Under Mr. King's bill, companies could no longer take a tax deduction on wages paid to illegal aliens.

Mr. McCain, Mr. Giuliani and Mr. Huckabee all say border security must be the first priority, although each of them also still calls for citizenship rights for some illegal aliens.

Rep. Tom Tancredo, a longtime critic of illegal entry, will not be attending the Spanish-language debate.

I’d imagine it would be in English with Spanish subtitles or translation. I doubt all the candidates speak Spanish.

The debate is scheduled for Dec. 9. Candidates will answer questions in English, and their answers will be translated into Spanish for broadcast.

Will there be questions from the audience, provided by the Clinton campaign?

“I doubt all the candidates speak Spanish.”

Nor should they. English is the standard in America. Wanna live here? Learn the d@mn language! :)

This makes sense to me, Conservatism is Conservatism no matter the language, and if the Dhimmis had the kajones to engage in the same platform some months ago, so should we, why ceed anything to the Dhimmis?

Well said and worth repeating.

A lot of their wages are already paid is cash. Hard to deduct now.

Yep and watch the retards sink even further with "Hispanic voters". Pandering gets you NOWHERE. Why is it so difficult to say you welcome LEGAL immigrants with open arms but strongly oppose ILLEGAL immigration? Half of me hopes to see the republicans lose on this issue because they are such babies about it.

Mr. McCain, Mr. Giuliani and Mr. Huckabee all . . .

. . . can kiss my royal arse. There's already a way for illlegal aliens to get citizenship: apply to come here legally and wait your turn in line. I'm tired of the damn pandering.

IMO, too many people that I’ve read on the subject just don’t consider that “Hispanics” may actually have something in common with Conservatives.

To simply fold our arms and say “Nunca Siempre” is foolish, but then again, so were the Amnesty proposals.

IMO, a Republican Candidate who can both secure the border, and deal with the illegals in a way that is both Legal and fair, would make tremendous inroads into a very very Conservative Community.

Ronald Reagen is still remembered fondly in the “Hispanic” community.

It varies. Those who are working with fake papers get paid officially and the employers get to deduct the wages. Others get paid in cash. It's hard to tell which group is larger.

I wouldn't bet on all of them pandering. There are many Latinos who are as upset about illegal immigration as we are.

In fact, US citizen Latinos are among the groups most hurt by our current immigration policy since all the cheap labor we're letting in is driving down their wages.

Reagan is fondly remembered in the Cuban, Nicaraguan and Salvadoran expat community for his stand against communism.

not for any touchy feely latino love thing with the vato/ese/canale crowd

those latino groups are very very different

like southerners and yankees
