Truth Squad: Ethics

November 09, 2007

The Arkansas Ethics Commission created under the rein of Bill Clinton, has been misused as a weapon against Republicans. Governor Huckabee has been unfairly attacked regarding his ethics history while Governor of Arkansas. The overwhelming majority of the complaints were filed in the midst of one of Governor Huckabee's campaigns, and filed by Democrats to a commission made up of a vast majority of Democrats. The end result of those complaints was a series of negative headlines-and NOTHING else. Here are the facts:

The overwhelming majority of ethics complaints filed against Governor Huckabee in the state of Arkansas were regularly dismissed and / or proven to be frivolous.

It is important to note that many of these complaints were either filed by a member of the Arkansas media with his own agenda or were filed by a Democrat activist using the so-called reporter's story as the basis for the complaint.

The REAL story is that in the end, despite the many attempts, the only finding of an illegal gift was reversed on appeal.

Why I like Mike for GOP 'bus driver'
WorldNetDaily | 11/8/2007 | Janet Folger

The bus is leaving the station. Two of them, actually. Going to two very different places. ...

I read the Republican destination platform. We're on the right bus. We just need to quit throwing paper-wads at each other long enough to hire the driver who agrees to take us where we want to go. May I suggest a driver without a long record of traffic violations like driving the wrong way on one-way streets such as abortion, marriage and judicial appointments?...

By the way, if you're willing to compromise on life and marriage, go buy a ticket for the RINO safari bus, because you're a Republican in name only. Besides, if Giuliani or Romney were at the wheel, a whole lot of passengers would head for the emergency exit. And of those who remain, they're not likely to chip in for gas or help change a flat tire.

One of Rove’s greatest mistakes in judgment was to err on the side of the establishment wing over movement Conservatives in political races. They (he and the WH) were responsible for the disastrous selections of Lamar!, Pete Coors, Chafee, Kirk Humphreys, and other piss-poor Senate candidates (in the case of Humphreys, almost every poll showed him losing to the Democrat, and had it not been for Tom Coburn unapologetically upending Humphreys, OK would now have Brad Carson as the junior Senator).

Mike Huckabee also needs to fully explain about his “pro-nanny politics” tendencies. As POTUS, he wants a national ban on smoking, and this is only as a start. Any pro-nanny politician isn’t a conservative in my book. It’s bad enough that Mike Huckabee raised taxes several times during his duration as Governor of Arkansas, and being a pro-nanny politician only makes things even worse for his chances of ever becoming the next POTUS. His protectionist point of view on trade issues is also hurting his chances among many voters, but I’m a believer in fair trade over free trade. I would vote for him for POTUS if he’s the final GOP Presidential choice, but he still has a lot of explaining to do on a variety of issues as do all of the other GOP Presidential candidates. We all truly need to successfully unify around whoever is the final choice for POTUS on the GOP side and then also do what we can truly do to very successfully elect a straight “conservative ticket” from the most local political offices all the way up to POTUS! Anything less than all of this and we will all be forced to see long-term socialism come into the U.S.!

MARGARET WARNER: Where are you on immigration?

MIKE HUCKABEE: Well, I think the failure of the government has been they haven't sealed the border. It's harder for me to get on an airplane in my hometown of Little Rock, Arkansas, than it is for an illegal to cross the border. That's what makes Americans mad.

They're not mad at immigrants. They understand immigrants want to come here for the same reason their ancestors did. But here's where the failure is: You can't allow people to break the law and then have no consequence.

My reasons for supporting the idea that, if a student had been in our schools, had performed academically and behaved, and had done everything that we asked of one of the students in our school to qualify for a scholarship, then it's in our best interest to let the student apply for the scholarship because they would -- part of the provision was they'd have to apply for citizenship.

But here's the other part. You don't punish the child for the parents having broken the law. We don't do that. We don't say, "OK, your parents broke a law, so we're going to punish you for it." I just don't understand why anybody would think that that's a good thing to do.

MARGARET WARNER: That's not a popular position among a lot of Republicans.

MIKE HUCKABEE: No, it isn't. It's not very popular at all, and I took a lot of heat for it, and still do. I still get criticized.

But I'm a person who believes in strong border security. I don't believe in amnesty. But neither do I believe in, again, doing something that is ultimately harmful to a person who didn't break the law. You know, a kid who comes here who's 3 years old, I don't think he had a whole lot of choice about saying, "Hey, Dad, let's break the law. Let's cross the border." He didn't even know where he was going. So let's not punish him.

It's often a good sign in presidential politics when people say nasty things about you. It means you are threatening. It means others fear you.

While I'd prefer to be in the realm of reason you are correct that most people respond to elections with a tribal/familial reaction combined with the amount of mass advertising they're subjected to. Asking citizens to actually look at voting histories and such is purposely presented as "hard work" while they can simply choose between Brand A and Brand B in a slick, prepackaged format that spares them the labor of actually thinking about it.

Which is what I was just criticizing Rove (Carville, Mattalin, etc.) for. These people's cynicism are truly contributing to the ever-lowering number of actual voters in each election cycle. Citizens don't get that these creeps fear mass voter turnouts more than anything as all of these characters like to believe their lying assured the elections of their respective candidates.

So everyone who can, no matter what party they like, should vote just to splash such detritus against the rocks of true democracy. 40% of the total population is a shameful figure for a nation founded on citizen participation while so many Third World nation's citizens struggle for any voice at all.

The reports you posted above are worth reading and thought. The challenge is getting the citizens to pay real attention to what’s going on in the political sphere while they’re justifiably preoccupied with survival. The more stressed the populace is the more the political reps are on their back-burner.
