MADRID -- Spain's King Juan Carlos I was applauded by the national media Sunday for telling Hugo Chavez to "shut up" after the Venezuelan president heaped abuse on a former Spanish premier at an Ibero-American summit. The Spanish king stormed out just before the scheduled end of the forum in the Chilean capital Santiago after Chavez described his former prime minister Jose-Maria Aznar as a "fascist" and launched a stinging tirade. Before walking out, the king told Chavez to "just shut up."
The dispute was a dramatic finale for the 17th meeting of the heads of state and government of Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries...
The conservative ABC newspaper hailed the king for "defending Spain from the attacks of Hugo Chavez and Daniel Ortega," the president of Nicaragua. "Venezuela would have been better represented in Chile by the students of Caracas University who risk their lives...while peacefully calling for the return of democracy," it said. The El Pais newspaper said Chavez's diatribe had "surpassed all tolerable limits in a relationship between two countries."
I wonder what Jimmuh Carter and Sean Pencilhead, two of Chavez’s best buddies, have to say about all this.
Good for Juan Carlos. Kings usually avoid meddling in politics, but it looks as if he did the right thing!
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
I have a question — why didn’t our Ambassador to the U.N. tell Chavez to shut up back on Sept. 20, 2006?
Don't mistake braggadocio for confidence.
I think he worries and worries a lot.
If he wakes up at night in a cold sweat it's for a good reason.
Well, for that alone I must say ¡Viva Juan Carlos, Rey de España!
Just goes to show that, on rare occasions, having a King can come in handy. The King stood up for his country and its elected leaders. Diplomats at the U.N. can’t do that. Perhaps we can come to some kind of out-sourcing arrangement with El Rey Don Juan Carlos.
If our CIA and other clandestine services were even one-tenth as capable and sinister as they are portrayed by Hollywood and the Chomskyites, Chavez would have been worm food five years ago.
As for myself, I wish they were a lot more aggressive. I think that killing off the likes of Hugo Chavez would be a very good idea, if it could be done cleanly and anonymously. I also wish we would hunt down and slaughter a few thousand of the most radical imams in the Muslim world.
Not only that, but no one can deliver a “back of the hand” gesture like a king. (I’m not arguing in favor of a monarchy, however).
I’ve been saying for years that people need political story lines ala the WWF/WWE. The republicans need to hire Vince McMahon or his writers.
Starting with Mookie. Wonder how many lives THAT has cost us?

Sorry for the double post.
Last night someone posted a video link of this exchange. I don’t speak Spanish, but it was funny anyway just seeing the expression on Chavez’s ugly face. Also, another poster observed that the King used the familiar version of the word you, “tu”, rather than the formal version, “usted”, when he dressed Chavez down with “Why don’t you just shut up?”. In other words, he addressed Chavez as one would a child, further adding to the insult. Bravo!
There are dozens of versions of the video on YouTube now, and the comments are hilarious. If the King had had longer arms, he would have bitch-slapped him. Here is a link to the video on Miguel Octavio’s blog: http://blogs.salon.com/0001330/
Where is the damn CIA when we need it? We are certainly paying for it. Do the job. We don’t want to know. Shut up about it. Stop all the wringing of hands and belly-button contemplation.
Hugo Chavez DOES get a little tiresome after while, not even changing his insults.
Any comedian who could not come up with a better act than that would get booed off the stage.
Chavez’ only real connection with comedy is the fact he is a standing joke. But one that has some economic levers he can pull, and can stand off any domestic opposition by executive fiat and armed force where necessary.
Spanish media is hell of a lot better than our own media ! I would have liked to see Juan Carlos say that to Chavez !
There is a link at number 16, or you can go to YouTube and type Rey Espana hugo chavez into the search engine and see several dozen versions. It is well worth the trip, very gratifying, to watch that video.
