Only a couple of years ago, Firefox was the little browser that could — an open-source program created by thousands of contributors around the world without the benefit of a giant company like Microsoft to finance it.

Since then, Firefox, which has prospered under the nonprofit Mozilla Foundation, has grown to be the largest rival to Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, with 15 to 20 percent of the browser market worldwide and higher percentages in Europe and among technology devotees. It is the most popular alternative browser since Netscape, with about three times as many users as Apple’s Safari.

You can reset the default folder by going into the Tools/Options box and specifying the folder by browsing to the one you want.

Maybe with that "poor stepchild" salary she is pulling down, she can afford a hair stylist now.

The scary thing is it looks like she has one. That hairdoo is deliberate.

Switched to Kubuntu (Ubuntu with a KDE desktop) here so that I could ateer clear of Vista. I do still have my XP laptop also running during the day, but am about 70% converted by now.

For me the secret was to move my email to Linux first - and everything else naturally follows. I'm particularly enjoying KOffice. My biggest reason to keep XP around was to use MS Project, however 'OpenProj' is the perfect solution to that (highly recommended).

Like the other something is broke or out of date you tube runs just fine for me and my kids all using Firefox and believe me they watch a lot of You tube. If I had to guess your player is old and needs an update. The only site that does not present right is our troops website on club spaces and that is only the pictures not being in the right places.

Firefox was written on Netscape source code.

Actually, IIRC, Both Netscape and Firefox are based on the Mozilla browser / source code.

First, there was Mozilla, then Netscape. Firefox came much later, but Mozilla has been around from the beginning and I believe is still available as a stand-alone browser.

I used to like firefox. Now it always crashes on me.

Same here. It freezes on me every few days, which it never did the first couple years of using the browser. And I periodically get some message saying that it can't load all its files (or something like that). Deleting Firefox and reloading it hasn't made a difference. IE sucks, don't like Opera.

Over the holidays, I'm going to format my drive and try to set it up to duel-boot Linux (probably Ubuntu) and XP and get away from Windows mostly.

I've been using Firefox since it was Firebird, and it has never, ever locked up on me.

Of course, I've never, ever run it under Windows. Your switch will help matters enormously.

There are several sites I use that didn’t work at all with Firefox until I started running the Internet Explorer emulator plug in. They run faster now than they did with IE.

Firefox is the great little browser. Apple Safari has only recently gained a foothold on Windows. However, the only true cross platform browser remains Firefox. It looks and works the same across Mac, Windows and Linux platforms.

I tried Ubuntu but found it didn’t upgrade well—most debian based Linux seem to be a PITA when they make major upgrades.

Not likely to be easy for most people to use, but I now run Gentoo on one of my machines. Since it compiles from source, I can optimize it for my processor rather than using pre-compiled binarys which usually default to 386 processors (really).

It’s fun to play around with and learn more about the way linux works. Definitely not for everyone.

The thing that's amazing to me - about the browser wars - is that none of the browsers can get it right for people like me: people who browse full-screen.  It's continually been a one step forward, two steps back situation.

IE 6 did it best but had security issues.  The plug-in for full screen browsing on Firefox overrides the auto hide function of the Windows Start Bar.  And now, IE 7 does the same thing.....if you go into full screen using 7, the browser assumes you're using kiosk mode and won't pop up the Start Bar.

It's annoying that no one can made a decent, function-rich browser.

You can reset the default folder by going into the Tools/Options box and specifying the folder by browsing to the one you want.

You don't even have to have a default. You can set it to browse for a folder each download.
