Monuments to Wimpdom
The American Thinker ^ | 11/11/07 | Duncan Maxwell Anderson

On the spot where New York's mighty World Trade Center stood, the Lower Manhattan Development Corp.'s anointed designer, Michael Arad, decrees that there be . . . just two huge, square, "reflecting" pools. Maybe you can gaze at your navel through them. In a complex slated to cost $1 billion, this urban swamp is called "Reflecting Absence."

Absence, indeed. What these modern war memorials have in common with each other is nothing. They portray nothingness. They have no people in them, never mind men carrying guns or swords. . . [T]o list deaths without comment about what they did in life is an assertion of meaninglessness, of pointlessness. It is to say, "You sacrificed for others -- but that's not worthy of mention, because now you're just as dead as anyone else."

Ever since Maya Lin made the Vietnam Memorial look like a tomb, lefties seem to get the assignments to build our war memorials—which are more like anti-war, anti-American memorials. We need need to raze them and replace them with statues more like "The Minuteman."

Modern art is such a disappointment.

James Lileks had a great piece awhile back concluding that if we had any courage or conviction as a people the memorial at ground zero would consist of “stern stone eagles.” Instead, we have committees of the conflicted expressing nebulous feelings and vague ideas.

I agree with the article. Never liked Maya Lin's design. Thought it was a mistake when it got approved, and still think it's a mistake now.

The Flight 93 memorial plan is even worse than described in this article. If they've changed the title from "crescent of embrace" to "bowl of embrace," that's not good enough. Get the touchy-feely hippie "embrace" thing out of it altogether; and more importantly, get ALL of the Islamic imagery built into this design OUT.

For the most part, “Modern Art” is an oxymoron.

Its basis is quite dated (hence not modern), and it’s not “art” by most descriptives I was taught.

The designer of that “crescent of embrace” and all those who approved that bit of overt demonstration of enemy sympathy should be treated as the degenerate betrayers that they’ve shown themselves to be.

This sort of crap will only continue to get worse until it is made too painful to play.

Funny how both the Flight 93 memorial and the Arizona 911 memorial have the same shape.

“Crescent of Embrace”

Democrats are not only traitors to America, they are traitors to Logic, traitors to science, traitors to humanity, etc.

If it was the “Cross of Embrace,” all Democrats would be screaming bloody murder. (Illogical position)

Should have put two nuclear ballistic missile silos there instead of reflecting ponds as a warning to the next nation that harbors those who piss with us!

Well Said. I hate that design . It is alarming how much that design looks like a crescent.

” Modern art is such a disappointment.”

Either! Let God sort it out! We have plenty of Nukes to go around for anyone who wants to step up to the plate!
