Richard Viguerie on Republican Losses in Virginia
(Manassas, Virginia) Richard A. Viguerie, author of Conservatives Betrayed: How George W. Bush and Other Big-Government Republicans Hijacked the Conservative Cause (Bonus Books, 2006), issued the following statement regarding the losses suffered by the Virginia Republican Party in the November 2007 elections:
Following the loss of the Governorship in 2005 and the U.S. Senate seat in 2006, the Virginia Republican Party continued its meltdown with the net loss of at least four seats in the State Senate and three seats in the State House of Delegates.
In light of the 2005, 2006, and 2007 elections, it is crystal clear that new legislative leaders are desperately necessary. The present Republican team in Richmond has failed, especially in the Senate. Grassroots activists and donors should demand these leaders be replaced for their failures.
No one should be surprised at the election results. This is a direct result of the Republican in Name Only (RINO) legislative leadership. These RINO legislators have openly collaborated with the liberals in the General Assembly and with Democratic governors Mark Warner and Tim Kaine to massively increase spending and taxes.
As a result, the Virginia Republican Party ”like the national Republican Party” has lost its brand as the party of fiscal responsibility. And the predictable election results have been the same on both the state and national levels. Liberal voters who want higher spending and higher taxes predominantly vote Democratic, while conservatives, having been betrayed by Republicans, lose heart and interest in voting.
Interestingly, the leader of the RINOs has been John Chichester, the recently retired State Senator from Fredericksburg. And now that he is retired, he revealed his true colors through endorsements of several Democrats.
The Virginia Republican Party ”which dominated the state just a few years ago” has placed the raw pursuit of power over its principles, and in the process has lost both power and principles. It will not return to power until it returns to principled conservatism. Until then, the Party will continue to spiral downward.

And yet many here on FR think that a Republican who differs with Bush only in degree, instead of substance, actually stands a realistic chance of winning the presidency.

Amen to that.
But to ask a RINO to stop being a RINO is like yelling at a drunk to stop drinking.
It doesn’t work.
The losses the Republicans have suffered in recent elections were due exactly to the compromise (or outright desertion) of Conservative principles. RINO’s have gone far in sinking the party. It’s amazing that it took over 10 years for Conservatives to get fed up with it.
At the same time the district she was running in didn't vote for her Dem opponent because he likes guns ~ they voted for him because he's a Dem. Her failure was that she sounded like a Dem, but used old soundbyte techniques the Dems have abandoned in the last decade.
Made her sound tired and thoughtless.
I have done this on an individual level, and whenever I receive a response it is no more than lip service. I am getting flat out tired of being brushed off. I am going to start making life absolutely unbearable for these folks.
The good news is that any time you have a moderate-to-conservative area, the best way to keep Democrats out of power is to elect a completely Democrat government. They’ll eventually do themselves in (see pre-1994 Clinton administration).
I would have voted for that Democrat in a second. I simply have to assume that anyone who wants to preemptively disarm me either wants to enslave me or kill me.
It’s simple - if you stand for nothing, then you’ll fall for anything...
I think the it started with the election for Governor when Mark Early (lifetime NAACP member) was beaten by Mark Warner. Early didn’t impress conservatives at all and thus gave the election to Warner who acted fairly conservative during his campaign. Now we can expect Warner to be replacing another RINO, John Warner in the US Senate. Makes me sick!
That is right on! I was dumbfounded when the Republicans raised taxes. I said to myself what is the difference between Democrats and Republicans when they each raise taxes? Also, the retiring Virginia State Senator from the 27th District, a fellow named Potts, failed to endorse the Republican running a close race to replace him. His recent voting in the Virginia Senate was more Democrat than Republican I recall. It is disillusioning. What happened to borders, language, and culture in the great State of Virginia?

There is STILL a determined, but core Conservative, traditional southern group left (in the party); waiting for them to make a comeback (I used to rub elbows with a few of them) when I was at Liberty University (and I am/was a government major!).

Should have added that you can email any republican senator in the state, and you will never receive a reply.

That would have cost him my vote as well.
I would love to see Brent Bozell’s outfit do a detailed analysis of media coverage of Republican losses in Virginia vs. media coverage of Rat losses in Louisiana.
