November 13, 2007 -- CBS News writers could be joining their enter tainment colleagues on the picket lines.
The writers, members of the Writers Guild of America, East, are expected to vote unanimously Thursday to authorize a strike on both the national and local levels.
They've been working without a contract since April 2005.
It doesn't mean we will automatically call [a strike], but it gives us the authority to call it," said WGA spokeswoman Sherry Goldman.
"It's been almost a year since the last vote. Last November, the contract CBS offered was rejected by 99 percent of [the WGA] members.
"CBS told us it was their final offer."
That contract proposed a two-tier wage package (paying national writers more than local writers); the right to assign current WGA responsibilities to non-WGA employees; and the right to merge Guild and non-Guild shops.
If a strike is actually called, it would affect 500 CBS News writers in New York, L.A., Chicago and Washington, D.C.
Here in New York, it would affect WCBS 880 AM and WCBS FM, the "CBS Evening News with Katie Couric" and "The Early Show" - along with all Ch. 2 newscasts.

Someone has to write the fiction....er, I mean news.
CBS??? ISn’t that the station with Kewpie Couric? Does this mean she’d be writing her own headlines and stories?? Quick! Get popcorn.
I’m surprised they’re not part of the Hollywood Writer’s Guild since they write fiction, too.
Of course CBS has news writers- somebody has to make the stuff up!
Lol! Beat me to it!!!
Why do you have to “write” the news? State the facts about what happened, and move on.
Could they? Please?
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
If something doesn’t happen quick, they may have to resort to reporting factual information, or at least recycling old fiction.
It's gonna be a buy next couple of months at Kinko's.
That crazy bastard, Bill Burkett, will make stuff up for free! And CBS is more than glad to report it!
Shouldn’t they be called “News Creators”?....................
Since they generally write fiction I assumed they were already on strike.
This makes perfect sense in that most of the strikers are writers of fiction.
Shouldn’t be a problem...Hell! a “Magic 8 Ball” would give more accurate news.
Just re-run last month's news programs......Global Warming, Hillary!, Bush Bad, Iraq is lost, etc. The viewers won't know the difference.............
2who knew CBS wrote their own stories? Ask Dan Rather.
Good one!!!
