GOP Primary -- 5 in Double Digits, 4 within Striking Distance of Giuliani, Who Remains the One To Beat: In a Republican Primary for President of the United States held in South Carolina today, 11/13/07, two months to the vote, New Yorker Rudolph Giuliani finishes 1st at 26%, with 4 other Republicans bunched in his rear-view mirror. Mitt Romney is in 2nd place at 20%, just ahead of Fred Thompson who finishes 3rd at 18%. John McCain is 4th at 14%. Mike Huckabee is 5th at 12%. SC Republican primary voters are divided on what issue the next president should focus on ahead of all others. Those who name "Terrorism" consolidate behind Giuliani, then Huckabee. Those who name "Immigration" as the most important issue, back Romney and Thompson. Republicans are 12 times more likely than Democrats to name "Terrorism" as the issue the next president should focus on first. Romney leads Upstate, Giuliani leads in the Midlands and in the Low Country.

It’s still a horse race, as it should be in primary season.

The Dems have the “anointed one” as their likely nominee. No such person on the Republican side. Good thing. Dole was the “anointed one” and didn’t do so well. Bush 41 as well, but was fortunate to be running against Dukakis.

Whoever emerges as the nominee on the Republican side should be well prepared for the general election.

This is a dream scenario for Hillary, and a nightmare for Republicans. The Republicans will blow their campaign funds trying to beat each other, and when a winner is finally nominated, they’ll face off against Clinton who will hold a 5 to 1 advantage in dollars on hand.

The Republican pool needs to shrink to 2 front-runners in the next 45 days, or the Republican party is in a lot of trouble after the primaries.

I don’t think it matters at all. In addition to donations, Romney has personally $100M available for general election. It should be enough to combat Hillary.

No such person on the Republican side. Good thing.

Agreed, it is a good thing, but to a point. We really need to exorcise the liberal branch of the Republican party once and for all. The problem comes if they nominate a RINO and conservatives are compelled to find and alternative or not vote at all.

This is why the RudyMcRomney fiasco is such a dire threat to this party.

None of them are conservative. They play more into a "liberal media selects Republican candidate" conspiracy theory moreso than anything else.

To this date, I can't say who will get my vote, but I definitely know "None of the above" will get it.

I'm leaning towards Fred Thompson, he's been drawing the most media flak attacks, so he must be close to the target.

Hunter would be nice but he has been all but crushed by the liberal media. He hasn't found a means to get around it, at least not to the measure of success that Thompson has.

Huckabee is over before he even starts here. One thing FReepers do is loads of research. Just a few net searches are enough to sway people off Huckabee.

Not a lot of good choices, but it's a heck of a lot better than "her fugliness" that the dims are stuck with.

Guilani's splendid job on 9-11 after the fact is more than negated by his sanctuary city policy before.

Something like 16 of the 19 hijackers weren't in the country legally and would have been able to remain indefinitely under sanctuary city policies such as those supported by Guilani.

Maybe. But I’ll bet a lot of money is holding off until there is a nominee. Up until this week, Hillary has had kid glove treatment. She had trouble with one tough question from Russert. The Republicans on the other hand have had plenty of practice with tough questions and will have an advantage there.

Some Other Republican gets 6% and undecided gets 4%...... Giuliani shows to be setting up to stop Romney's strategy of momentum buidling after winning IA/NH.... Hopefully Thompson can pick up a few more points.

You summed it up in post 11 .

I think Rudy’s numbers are hollow , but Fred must win S.C. and Florida .

Fred has the fire. Just picture Fred on a stage with Hillary debating National Security. The mere contrast will be an election winner for us .

Romney has personally $100M available for general election.

So you think mitt can buy the election. I don't think so!

He never arrived despite all the hoopla on this forum. Hunter has been running for the past year and had to know of his intent for sometime prior to that and yet he can’t even capture enough of the primary voters to even get mentioned. His limelight is about over as there are 50 days until Iowa starts the selection process with their caucuses.

Interesting. Females really like Romney (24, vs men 17) while opposite is true for Thompson (females only 14, men 21). I’m not sure how useful information this is, though.

Conservatives favor Guliani (25) and Romney (21).

So that leaves Fred and whom for vice. Media pushing Huck to hard and Romney with all his money cannot overtake Guliani. Fred has got to be both Guliani and then I believe Hilda/Osama.

Great, you already made a lot of my points. ;-)

(1) The ladies don't like Thompson. This is true from other polls. He gets like 2% of the Moms in Florida.
(2) The ladies like Romney, from a moderate to considerable margin.
(3) In Florida, Giuliani was disfavored by the ladies. Not so here and in other polls.
(4) Romney gets more conservative support than Thompson in this poll (I need a Nelson Ha Ha .mp3 link here).
(5) The youth like Thompson, the elderly Romney. I wouldn't have thunk this, but I've seen it in other polls.
(6) Romney doesn't seem to get much traction from his health plan, if he doesn't win those for whom Health is the top issue.
(7) Romney wins the Immigration as top issue vote! That has got to help against the Dem in the general election.
