Is Israel a Jewish state?
Boston Globe ^ | November 14, 2007 | Jeff Jacoby

IN ADVANCE of the upcoming diplomatic conference in Annapolis, Israel Prime Minister Ehud Olmert announced the other day that he expects the Palestinian Authority to finally acknowledge Israel's existence as a Jewish state. A newly arrived visitor from Mars might wonder why this should even be an issue - after all, Israel is a Jewish state. If the more than 55 countries that make up the Organization of the Islamic Conference are entitled to recognition as Muslim states, and if the 22 members of the Arab League are universally accepted as Arab states, why should anyone balk at acknowledging Israel as the world's lone Jewish state? more stories like this

Yet Olmert's demand was rebuffed. Saeb Erekat, the senior Palestinian Authority negotiator, said on Monday that Palestinians would refuse to recognize Israel's Jewish identity on the grounds that "it is not acceptable for a country to link its national character to a specific religion."

In fact, there are many countries in which national identity and religion are linked. Argentinian law mandates government support for the Roman Catholic faith. Queen Elizabeth II is the supreme governor of the Church of England. In the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan, the constitution proclaims Buddhism the nation's "spiritual heritage." The prevailing religion in Greece," declares Section II of the Greek Constitution, "is that of the Eastern Orthodox Church of Christ."

In no region of the world do countries so routinely link their national character to a specific religion as in the Muslim Middle East. The flag of Saudi Arabia features the shahada - the Islamic declaration of faith - in white Arabic script on a green background; on the Iranian flag, the Islamic phrase "Allahu Akbar" (God is great") appears 22 times.

I can understand Bush’s fever over this effort. He thinks a peace agreement will be his legacy. Over Israel’s dead body it just may be.

ElMorte is the one I can’t figure out. The guy is flat out suicidal crazy to deal with the Palestinians. And if he concedes part of Jerusalem, I couldn’t support him if I were an Israeli.

This upcoming peace agree stands a very good chance of just about destroying Israel. It seems willing to give away the farm in the interest of a peace that will never come. Dream on while you can folks. We may all be in for a real nightmare soon.

Does anyone, for a single minute, think Olmert has the slightest chance of pulling something off at Annapolis?

I don’t.

Olmert: "If you just say we're a Jewish state, we can talk."
Palis: "Over your dead body."
Olmert: "I guess we'll talk anyway or Bush will cut off our aid."
Palis: "We'll drive your women and children into the ocean."
Olmert: "I wish you wouldn't say that."
Bush: "Israel, your attitude is unhelpful."
I'm not sure why Israel listens to anything we say.

Gee...weren’t they supposed to have done this back in 1993? And then they supposedly did it for Clinton too. How many times do we have to go through this charade? In the end, any piece of paper from the Pallis means zip. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a fool or (more likely) a liar.

Get used to disappointment.

If Israel is a Jewish state, is America a Christian state? If not....why not.

Once the Palestinains are given statehood on the West Bank, they will have autonomy. At that point the U.N., the U.S. and the rest of the world will stand by as it arms to the teeth, as nations are want to do.

You can’t defend against what the Palestinian state will become.

I appreciate your take on it, and I understand what prompts you to say what you have. I just don’t think it accurately addresses the reality the future will become for Israel.

Israel's identity as a Jewish State should be non-negotiable. If the Palestinians refuse a peace deal that accepts the sine qua non of Israel's being, better no peace than a "peace" that is a down payment on Israel's eventual destruction.

no I certainly don’t believe in a palestinian state. I’m just saying the israelis think they can control and contain it from the outside because they don’t want to go inside.

I appreciate your follow-up. I did misread your intent there. It’s clear what you meant but I did mistakenly take it to mean that Israel would be under no threat.

I appoligize for that.

Thank you.

I think the other part of the problem is that the right hasn’t really developed its own long term solution leaving a major idea vacuum for the left to fill.

That may be true. It wouldn’t be the first nation where that took place, would it. IMO, that’s a problem we experience today.

Yes, he can pull something off. He can make a declaration speaking on behalf of Israel’s government, and this then will become Israel’s official policy. The damage will be enormous.
