Gov. Spitzer's sky-high popularity has fallen faster and further than that of any governor in modern state history due to his licensing illegals plan and the ongoing Dirty Tricks Scandal.... The Siena College Research Institute survey - conducted before Spitzer said he's scrapping the plan - found New Yorkers, by an overwhelming 64 to 33% disapprove of the job he's doing......and by 70-25%, voters said they were against Spitzer's licensing illegals. "Spitzer's standing with voters has fallen faster and further than any politician in recent NY history," said a Siena spokesman.

In a statement released by Spitzer’s office October 2007, Chief Bratton enforsed the licensing plan, saying: "As former Commissioner of the New York City Police Department and now Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department (since 2002), I support efforts that have the potential to solve crimes and improve traffic safety. That’s why I backed legislation in California that would give undocumented immigrants the ability to get a driver’s license once they have provided proof of their identification. It is my belief that by doing that you would reduce the number of hit and runs and increase the number of insured motorists on the road. We would also now have undocumented immigrants’ identifying information on record such as photographs and addresses which could prove helpful in the fight against crime and terrorism. "

In a NY magazine interview, Rudy Giuliani expressed his willingness to appoint Bratton as Homeland Security Secretary in a Giuliani admin. Earlier, in a hissy fit over Bratton's high media profile, Mayor Rudy fired Bratton as NYC police chief b/c Bratton was standing in Rudy's spotlight.

Critics say Spitzer is not only compromising security by licensing undocumented immigrants, but he also is opening the door to a flood of illegal voters. Aides to Spitzer say he is just following the existing law, and the new rules will improve security and public safety.
The DMV "mailbag" memo said that beginning Oct. 2 a motor voter registration would only be allowed "if there is a SSN [Social Security number] entered or if there is a previous verified SSN" on record.
On Friday, however, a new DMV memo was issued, rolling back the first one. "The state Board of Elections staff has advised that all motor voter applications must be transmitted in a timely manner to the appropriate board of election which will determine the client's eligibility to vote. Neither DMV nor its county clerk agents have any statutory discretion to withhold a motor voter form."

Parole boards under Gov. Spitzer are springing jailbirds at a far higher rate than they did during Gov. George Pataki’s administration, state Division of Parole figures show.
One of the lucky prisoners is convicted killer Maurice Murrell, 40, of Brooklyn.
Just two years ago, board commissioners rejected Murrell’s bid, saying his criminal past shows a “propensity for extreme violence and a disrespect for human life.”
But Thursday, after 23 years in prison, Murrell was released.
