You’re right....they abhored democracies.
My favorite questions to a liberal:
(1) What form of government do we have in the US?
(2) What is the difference between a Democracy and a Republic?
Then the killer: If you don’t know these answers, what good is your opinion?

We're supposed to have a Constitutional Republic, but I really think that these days what we have is a bastardocracy.

Democracy is mob rule. In a republic, the will of the people are respected insofar as the will of the people does not violate the God-given rights of any individual.
Or, as has been quipped before, Democracy is two lions and a lamb voting on what's for dinner. A Republic is two lions and a lamb voting on what's for dinner, except the lamb has a gun.

(2) What is the difference between a Democracy and a Republic? In a democracy 5 wolves and 2 sheep can vote on what to have for dinner.
In a Republic 5 wolves and 2 sheep can vote on what to have for dinner, except the sheep are allowed to carry firearms.- tom
