This was in a thread a while ago.

You might be thinking about the mathematical results on E8 that were announced several months ago. Check the Highfield link in my post #1...

Reported in the “New Scientist”? Isn’t this like 1 step up from Scientific American? (Which in turn is 1 step up from Popular Science”).

I think these days in physics real results are published in one of those WWW based archival media - people assert their right of ownership by posting on the web and skipping the peer review step of conventional journals.

But “New Scientist”? Maybe I’m wrong, but I would have thought that this was not exactly where major advances appear.

...reminds me of a TV show I saw about 10 years or so ago....I think John Stossel interviewed a guy who was a bartender in Long Island was tested and his IQ was off the charts....he lived in a little concrete block home off the backyard of another house...didn’t own a car...and his Harley wouldn’t start. He busied himself in his off hours writing a book on “The theory of everything”....

They never did a follow-up show about him and I never heard anything else in print or TV about the guy.

There’s a link to an Archiv pre-print of Lisi’s paper in my post #1...

I think I remember reading an article about that guy (and several other high-I.Q. under-achievers)...

Ok - agree that the archiv looks legit - also reminds me of the guru who walks up to the hot dog stand vendor and says “Make me one with everything”.

“a doctorate in theoretical physics.”

Man, I’m thinking that that involves some study time along the way.

“Mr. Lisi, what do you think of the theories of Stephen Hawking and Isaac Newton?”

“Oh, those guys are fags!”

So he’s the guy making all the crop circles, I’ll be darned.

I dream of E8 every single night but can never remember the details when I awake. This guy must have sucked them from my dream. Thief!

Pretty design though.

While we’re on theories of everything, here’s one I found interesting recently and it didn’t get much interest.

The E8 looks like a potholder.
It looks like a doily, not a potholder. I have disproven your theory with one simple, elegant rebuttal

Greg F proved he is a guy, because no guy knows what a doily is. So Greg F was correct using guy terminology.

So far, all the interactions predicted by the complex geometrical relationships inside E8 match with observations in the real world. “How cool is that?”
