Push to Give Driver's Licenses to Illegals in U.S., But in Mexico It's a Different Story
Fox News ^ | November 15, 2007

Hillary Clinton might be on one side of the border, then the other when it comes to issuing driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, but Mexican officials know exactly where they stand: no licenses for illegals. All of Mexico's 31 states require foreign residents to hold a valid visa if they want a Mexican license, according to a survey published Thursday in The Arizona Republic.

"When it comes to foreigners, we're a little more strict here," Alejandro Ruíz, director of education at the Mexican Automobile Association, told the newspaper.

Immigrant drivers became an overnight national campaign issue when Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton responded to a debate question by declared her support for a move by New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer to issue licenses to illegal immigrants.

"It makes a lot of sense," Clinton said during the Oct. 30 debate. She backed away from that support Wednesday when Spitzer announced he was backing off the plan.

Eight U.S. states allow drivers to get licenses without proving they are legal residents, the newspaper reported.

Mexicans account for more than half of the 12 million undocumented residents, according to the Pew Hispanic Center. Because of the number of illegal Mexicans residing in the U.S., America's southern neighbor has battled to open the licensing process in all 50 states. But licensing offices in all of Mexico's 31 states -- and Mexico City -- told The Arizona Republic that proof of citizenship is required. Temporary tourists can drive using their foreign licenses...

My understanding Mexico is very strict on illegals coming up from their southern borders. Different strokes for different hombres.

But aren’t all treaties and agreements we make supposed to favor any country but America? According to the Clinton-Bush regimes, this has been the policy! No more Clintons! No more Bushes! No more globalists!

I would be happy if we adopted all of Mexico’s immigration laws verbatim. That would immediately solve lots of problems for us and who could complain? (especially Mexicans).

I don’t think adopting their laws would make any different if THE GOVERNMENT ISN’T GOING TO ENFORCE THEM.

“When it comes to foreigners, we’re a little more strict here,”....Does anyone else see the absurd laughable stupidity of U.S. politicians?

You want enforcement? Make it simple....you suspect a company of hiring illegals...report it to the local cops and the fine involved for illegal hiring (at least $5,000 for each illegal)....goes to you for reporting the company. Company has issues about fines....fine...we’ll make it a personal tax for hiring a non-US resident without a visa. You as the reporting authority get a $5k tax credit next year. The key here...is to avoid letting the border patrol do their job because they can’t, and the other government agencies can simply lock their front doors and go home. We won’t need them anymore...just regular folks reporting the illegals and the companies doing business.

True. The Mexican government, to its credit, enforces its laws...

True, the Mexican Army is on the border.

Unfortunately it's the border with Guatemala!

There’s a group of us who have been yelling that for probably five years now. It’s not a popular line here on FR. Look whose ahead in the polls.

Mexico is tough on illegals. Hombre, you aren't allowed to drive in Mexico WITHOUT proof of citizenship.

Frustrating that the current leadership has no desire to enforce existing immigration law. This is a true bipartisan effort.

We ought to send Eliot and Hillary down to Mexico to observe how they deal with illegals.
