I don't know if Romney was lying then, or he is lying now, but the fact that Romney will tell people what they want to hear to win their votes doesn't seem to be debatable. Romney may have core principles, but what they are is anybody's guess.

If I vote for Romney, maybe he’ll send me one of those “clickers” that meteorologists use to advance screens when giving the forecast.

When Mitt was governor of my state, it was obvious that to survive in politics here, he had to adopt the blue state list of undeniable “truths”: Abortion (I had a friend who died from a botched back alley abortion), gay marriage (can’t fight it, won’t fight it, wouldn’t be prudent). He couldn’t embrace national Republicans (those Cretans)... anyway, he’s just a politician, and like that peculiar brand of person, his core principle is to say whatever it takes to get elected.

I think he is keeping all those clickers, he wears them out day by day.

He has so little respect for our Military that he thinks his children helping him run is the same as being in the Military!

I watched some of his interview with Glen Beck and he once again reinforced my hope that he’s not the nominee.

Isn’t Mitt the only candidate still polling high numbers who has never been divorced? I’m still stuck on that one - I’d like a president who’se married to their first wife still.

“I’d like a president who’se married to their first wife still.”

So you would prefer a BJ Clinton over a Ronald Reagan. LOL

How is it possible? I was just excoriated by a poster who said MR has always been pro-life (in his heart at least).

OK, I’ve come to learn that many of the Freepers here don’t like Mitt, and certainly don’t like Rudy, and I can’t imagine that too many are enthusiastic about the Huckster.

Tancredo, Hunter and Paul, like them or not, realistically don’t have a chance.

That leaves Fred Thompson and John McCain and John doesn’t seem to be too popular here either.

Boy, if Fred doesn’t get the nomination, we’re going to be in trouble.

He has so little respect for our Military

I am sure he has the greatest respect for the military. I am sure he feels we owe a gratitude to the military for our freedoms.

You shouldn’t make so much out of a stupid remark.

“He thinks his children helping him run is the same as being in the Military!”

Romney was the one who made that statement.
I just think it is an insult to our fine Military!

I’m sorry you live in such a rathole (though I am not insulting MA, just some of your fellow MA citizens), but I think one should stand up for what they believe whether they win or not (not bend “with the shifting doctricines”-Sticking their finger in the air..). To win, it shows a fundamentally Post-modern worldview on Mitt’s part, and I’ll never vote for Him!

Based on his own history, one core principle may be to “say what you need to say to get elected.”

Well, while you are endlessly chewing on it and nursing the grudge, at least report it correctly. He didn’t say that is the way he felt. He said that is the way his sons felt.

Whine, cry sob, I didn’t say it, my children feels that way.

Ronald Reagan

Mitt has also said, in spite of strong support for President Bush, that he will not be a clone of Bush either. Does that mean he rejects Bush or everything he stands for? No. He's saying he will be his own man. As great as Reagan was and as good as Bush has been in some areas --- there is room for improvement.

Romney on Reagan:
When I was running for office for the first time in 1994, I was trying to define who I was, not who I wasn’t. I was trying to define that I was an individual who had his own views and perspectives and I wasn’t a carbon copy of someone else. I’ve said since, and continue to reiterate, that one of my heroes is Ronald Reagan.

I’ve been asked time and again in interviews, who are your heroes? And I mention Ronald Reagan and Teddy Roosevelt and Dwight Eisenhower among others as some of my favorite heroes, and I feel that deeply. But I am a different person than any other person and my interest is, of course, looking forward to defining who I am.

Of course, now there’s no need for me to try to define myself in reference to others. I’ve got a record. And people can look at my record and see, for instance, that when people were clamoring to raise taxes in Massachusetts, I said “no” and we held the line on taxes, and held the line and borrowing, and we balanced our budget. They can see that I vetoed literally hundreds of line items in budgets because I thought there was too much spending. They can see that I fought for better schools. They can see that I fought for a better environment. And they can recognize that a lot what Ronald Reagan was doing I’m also doing. So I’m pretty proud to follow in his legacy, if you will, recognizing, of course, that there’s some differences. He’s just a lot better than anyone else I know.

Abortion

I think we all know by now that Mitt was personally pro-life, but politically pro-choice when he promised to maintain the status quo in Massachusetts. Repeating it over and over again will not change the fact, nor will it negate the fact that he had a sincere conversion and acted upon his conversion while in office by assisting in the pro-life cause whenever he could. Further, he's the top-tier, electable candidate who supports the HLA or a state ban on abortion in his own state should Roe V Wade be overturned. He maintains the best pro-life position of any of the top-tier.

Our modern-day William Wilberforce, and Founder of the National Right to Life Committee, Dr. John C. Willke, MD., just one month ago, endorsed Mitt Romney for President.

Dr. Willke said, "Unlike other candidates who only speak to the importance of confronting the major social issues of the day, Governor Romney has a record of action in defending life. Every decision he made as Governor was on the side of life. I know he will be the strong pro-life President we need in the White House. Governor Romney is the only candidate who can lead our pro-life and pro-family conservative movement to victory in 2008."

Amnesty

It's one thing to support immigration reform in general (or campaign finance reform, in general, for that matter) and something very different to commit to a specific and flawed plan like McCain's final bill which includes the Z-Visa. Mitt - and people like Sen. Jim DeMint and Sen. Sessions - found certain portions of the flawed McCain-Kennedy shamnesty bill reasonable, while they'd never sign it or vote for it etc... He could support certain campaign finance reforms without supporting the flawed McCain-Feingold-Thompson CFR bill.

The HUGE difference between then and now is the Z-visa in the McCain-Kennedy bill. Those who try to use the old interviews against Mitt either do not know what they are talking about, don't understand the consequences of the addition of the Z visa -- or both.

"The Z visa is a deal breaker for many people. I'm not sure the McCain team really gets that yet or they are being extremely disingenuous trying to equate the two knowing that the average voter [Freeper?] is too dumb to figure out the difference."

“There’s an old rule in Washington that in dealing with any tough issue, half the politicians hope that citizens don’t understand it, while the other half fear that people actually do.” —John Fund

Military

In 2003, Governor Romney Swore In Congressional Medal Of Honor Recipient Thomas Kelley As The State's First Secretary Of Veterans' Services. Gov. Romney elevated the state agency that advocates on behalf of the Commonwealth’s veterans to a cabinet level post in recognition of their contributions to state and country. (Office of Gov. Mitt Romney, "Romney Appoints State's 1st Secretary Of Veterans' Services," Press Release, 8/28/2003)

Governor Romney introduced and signed into law the "Welcome Home Bill," the most significant expansion of military veterans' benefits in recent years. The new law reduced to zero the cost members of the Massachusetts National Guard must pay to attend public colleges and universities, increased twenty-fold the death benefit paid to families of members killed in the line of duty, created a new annuity benefit for Gold Star spouses and boosted the amount paid to Gold Star parents. (Office of Gov. Mitt Romney, "Romney Signs Legislation Expanding Military Benefits," Press Release, 11/11/2005)

Governor Mitt Romney signed legislation that provided disabled Massachusetts veterans with extensive tax exemptions, allowed communities to suspend real estate taxes for active duty National Guardsmen and reservists until 180 days after they return home, and provided financial relief for the families of servicemen and women killed or missing in action. (Office of Gov. Mitt Romney, "Romney Expands Tax Benefits For Disabled Veterans," Press Release, 8/14/2006)

Governor Mitt Romney signed into law a measure to help state employees and their families meet their financial obligations while they are on active military duty. It provided state employees called to active military leave with the differential cost between their military and state salaries and guaranteed employees on active military duty would not lose any seniority, accrued vacation leave, sick leave, personal leave, compensation time or earned overtime. (Office of Gov. Mitt Romney, "Romney Lends a Hand to State Employees on Military Duty," Press Release, 11/27/2003)

Governor Romney signed into law a bill preventing employers from discriminating against current or prospective employees who are enrolled in any of the nation’s Reserve forces including the Air and Army National Guards and the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps and Naval Reserves. Gov. Romney said, "The American servicemen and women of the Guard and Reserve leave their jobs, their spouses and their children to wear the uniform that defends our country. This selfless commitment should be honored by businesses across Massachusetts as we work to ensure they are treated fairly while they balance their employment responsibilities and obligations to the armed services. No business should ever put the bottom line ahead of America’s front line." (Office of Gov. Mitt Romney, "Romney Signs Law Protecting Armed Service Members," Press Release, 9/23/2004)

Governor Romney Signed Legislation Ending The Practice Of Denying Benefits To Veterans Who Served Only During Periods Of Peace. (Courtney Hollands, "Concerns Over Fate Of Veterans Bill," The [Quincy, MA] Patriot Ledger, 6/16/2004)

The only problem with your assertion that Romney has always personally been pro-life is that a link in my original post has Romney saying, “I am personally pro-choice and I have been since my mother.....” (You’re entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts). Also, anyone committed to upholding Roe v. Wade is not going to appoint strict constructionist judges

Also, who forced Catholic Charities to go out of the adoption business in MA, because they refused to adopt to homosexual couples. (Mitt in case you missed that one). Even Dukakis criticized.

I love the way you quote the current Romney Spin, on his past quotes, the only problem, is if you go back and look at the video his intent on all these issues was not ambiguous.
