Looking At Iraq In Macro-time
RealClearPolitics.com ^ | November 19, 2007 | Michael Barone

When my father returned from service as an Army doctor in Korea in 1953, he brought back slides of the photos he'd shot, showing a war-torn country of incredible poverty. We would have laughed if you had told us that Americans would one day buy Korean cars. But 50-some years later, South Korea has the 13th-largest economy in the world, and you see Hyundais and Kias everywhere in America. Looking at things in micro-timeframes is not always a reliable guide to the macro-timeframe future.

So it may turn out to be with Iraq. We have been looking at Iraq in micro-timeframes -- or, for many who oppose the war, frozen in the timeframe of late 2006. A better picture of the micro-timeframe is that we have achieved considerable success this year.

"The trend toward better security is indisputable," writes The Associated Press. U.S. military and civilian deaths have declined sharply. Anbar province is pacified, Iraqis are streaming back to Baghdad, and al-Qaida in Iraq is on the run. Time's Joe Klein, a critic of the administration, admits the gains and advises Democrats not to try to cut off funds. Conservative columnist Tony Blankley claims "a very real expectation that next year the world may see a genuine, old-fashioned victory in the Iraq war."

AMEN BROTHER! We are winning this battle, but many others are on our plates. May Hillary Rodham Bottom and the communists never get a toe hold to destroy the greatest nation on earth. NEVER SURRENDER!

The big picture, the long haul, makes a big difference in perceptions, not just Iraq either. You can’t make someone “get it”. They have to want to.

And I find people on the left suffer from horribly self induced myopia.

Why is Klein just a "critic of the administration", yet Blankley is pegged as a "Conservative columnist"?

What's the point? Is anybody really being fooled anymore? I doubt it.

As for Iraq, we been down this road before. It may be hard to believe now but eventually in the future Iraq will be comparable to Germany and Japan. Most probably with a robust tourist industry centered on Baghdad (Mesopotamia) and of course oil wealth to get it kick started.

And how is that possible? Because in the end people are still people and they will gravitate towards a successful prosperous life for themselves and their children. Just look at what the attitude towards the Japanese was during WWII (rightfully so) and how they are today.

So we been there, done that, we know what to expect. Actually for Iraq to turnout differently would be the surprise, not the other way around.

What we may be seeing is a lesson no amount of money could buy--namely, we are seeing that the much-attacked (from left AND right) George W. Bush, who has stuck to his guns since 9/11, is proving that simply being honest and doing what you see is right, is being vindicated. The dems will have no choice but to soften their Iraq criticisms--aka LIE.

The American people, even the densest of them, will look around and think, "OK, Bush told us all along this would be a long fight but we WOULD prevail, and the Dems were screaming 'retreat' from say one, attempting to cut funds, attacking our troops. Which side do I trust?"

If the economy tanks next year forget it, the dems will win. But something no one has really talked about--indisputable victory in Iraq--could very well be the October Surprise that defeats the dems in a year when trends say they SHOULD win. (Also, they may be regretting taking congress last year, as a Republican congress to run against would appeal to the "Let's change SOMEthing" voter sentiment.)

Yes. George W. Bush’s steadfast determination on Iraq is why I think history will regard him as one of our greatest presidents.

You got it.

When GWB was sworn in in 2001, solid conservative voices were saying that if we just get the Supreme Court judges we want, everything else will be gravy.

We prevailed and got two of them so far.

We _will_ get more.

The gravy:

We _will_ win in Iraq and beyond as we change the whole face of the Middle-East slowly bringing it from barbarity into civilization (from the 14th to the 21st century).

We _will_ win in ‘08.

It’s a fried treat, the stuffing is a ground meat, schwarma (spelling?) like what you get in a gyro, lamb, beef, not sure exactly. The shell is made from wheat flour and has the same meat as a component of the shell dough, seasoned with ME spices and fried, very tasty! Like empanadas, the exact composition and recipe varies by country.

Barone is one of the few adults in the MSM. It is amazing they still employ him.
