Group aims to register 1 million new Hispanic voters
South Florida Sun-sentinel ^ | 11/15/07 | William Gibson

A nationwide movement to turn Hispanic immigrants into citizens and voters is focusing on Florida and four Southwestern states that may decide the 2008 presidential election.

Hispanics make up a large share of the electorate in Florida, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and Nevada, and each of these states could swing either way in the presidential race.

While New York and California are bound to cast their electoral votes for a Democrat and Texas almost certainly will vote Republican, Florida becomes the biggest swing state.

The four smaller Southwest states have emerged as a battleground, partly because of a surge of Hispanic voters. In a close election, they could make the difference.

New Mexico long has been a swing state. Colorado, Arizona and Nevada were Republican strongholds that have become competitive. As a result, some political analysts think Democrats should focus on the Southwest rather than try to cut into the Republican advantage in most of the South.

"Any combination of these states will be the key deciders of who wins the election in 2008," predicted Arturo Vargas of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials. "We are talking to the Latino community and saying, 'This is your time, your opportunity to make your voice heard."

Vargas is part of a coalition of national and local organizations known as "Ya es Hora," or "Now it's Time," which has organized a voter-mobilization campaign. It's a nonpartisan campaign, though past patterns indicate that a surge of Hispanic voting would help elect Democrats.

The campaign set a goal of turning one million Hispanic immigrants into citizens, and Vargas said more than a million applications will be filed by the end of the year.

The next phase is voter registration, "Ve y Vota!" or "Go and Vote!"

The Mexican vote could very well decide future elections because most Mexican immigrants will vote for the party that gives them other people’s money.

As long as they only register citizens, they will be doing great work for the country.

Again, as long as they only register citizens and bring more people into the political process to the point that they feel invested in America it will be a good thing for the country.

Sorry,I can't agree with you here.No US citizen worth a damn should have to be *encouraged* to register/vote or *solicited* to register/vote.Let the lazy and stupid stay home.

Just my 2 cents' worth.

The Dems will register anyone and anybody they feel can get by the challengers at the booth and maybe some that can’t.

I don’t believe for one minute that they are seriously launching this drive to just register Hispanic-American citizens, and, since, like Teddy Roosevelt, I don’t believe in hyphenated Americans and reject race politics, I don’t support any registration drives targeting people by ethnic background. I don’t think that helps America.

It's so simple to register and vote, that anyone who has to be registered by others is almost certainly lazy or stupid, and therefore a Democrat.

And, as usual, race-driven initiatives are okay as long as whites aren't the race in question.

It’ll be a wet dream for the power hungry Democrats but for the rank and file Democrats they’re like an old toy ready to hit the trash heap. And you liberal lurkers out there make no mistake about it the minute they get the chance they’ll turn on you faster than you can say is this my party?

I disagree, people who don't bother to register to vote on their own, won't bother to educate themselves on the candidates, or the issues, they will vote for the candidate that promises the most freebies from the Federal Treasury.

that’s right.

even iranian friends of mine in los angeles are democrats.

ironically, middle east immigrants are often NOT impoverished;

they escaped iran with their wealth hidden in gold and jewels

escape the mullahs, whom they hate.

but, ironically, they identify with the poor.
