Obama: I Tried Drugs As a Teen

By PHILIP ELLIOTT, Associated Press Writer 15 minutes ago

Presidential hopeful Barack Obama on Tuesday told high school students that when he was their age he was hardly a model student, experimenting with illegal drugs and drinking alcohol.

Obama stopped by a study hall at Manchester Central High School and answered students' questions about the war in Iraq and his education plan. But when an adult asked about his time as a student, Obama spoke bluntly.

"I will confess to you, I was kind of a goof-off in high school. My Mom reminds me of that," said Obama, an Illinois Democrat who grew up in Hawaii

"You know, I made some bad decisions that I've actually written about. You know, got into drinking. I experimented with drugs," he said. "There was a whole stretch of time that I didn't really apply myself a lot. It wasn't until I got out of high school and went to college that I started realizing, 'Man, I wasted a lot of time.'"

Obama has written about his drug use in his memoir, "Dreams from My Father."

"Junkie. Pothead. That's where I'd been headed: the final fatal role of the young would be black man," Obama wrote. Mostly he smoked marijuana and drank alcohol, Obama wrote, but occasionally he would snort cocaine when he could afford it.

Drugs, Obama wrote, were a way he "could push questions of who I was out of my mind, something that could flatten out the landscape of my heart, blur the edges of my memory."

Tried smoking pot a few times. Heart palpitations, nausea, and asthma cured me quickly (also the nutty people who became mean and paranoid.)

Hey, it was the 70’s!

I think you read too much into my statement. Saying that a (possibly calculated) moment of public honesty might have been a brilliant move is not exactly the same as saying that Obama is brilliant. I happen to think otherwise. But he’s also no dummy and every time he gets a chance to seem transparent to voters, believe me, they can’t help but compare that to HRC. Right now I think her greatest weakness in the eyes of voters is the (correct) perception that she’s dishonest and insincere.

I’ve wondered about that too.

It was amazing how quickly he was abandoned by every major Illinois Republican.

Democrats, on the other hand, almost always circle the wagons and fight it out.

Its a doctor working on a patient who is growing “bark-like” warts with no real cure. However the doctor is experimenting on a possible cure involving vitamin a. Its in all the news right now.

“I’m not sure Kucinich ever stopped.”

Kookcinchit is an experiment.

Whenever I see articles such as these, I am reminded of that font of received wisdom, the great Steve Martin. To wit -

I used to smoke marijuana. But I’ll tell you something: I would only smoke it in the late evening. Oh, occasionally the early evening, but usually the late evening - or the mid-evening. Just the early evening, midevening and late evening. Occasionally, early afternoon, early mid-afternoon, or perhaps the late-midafternoon. Oh, sometimes the early-mid-late-early morning. . . But never at dusk. Never at dusk.

Who didn’t?

I didn’t. But it makes me no saint.

I know alot of very good people who had “youthful indiscretions”. I would trust my life to them today.

It’s like the ‘toon. I didn’t care that he smoked pot in college. What I cared about was what he was doing in the Oval Office. THAT what much worse than taking a few tokes 20+ years ago.

Pretty funny. I cant get over how many people replied to my post and said they never tried drugs in High School. It’s quite refreshing. I graduated in 1983 and it was mainly pot. But that also led to cocaine and hallucinogenics. But then came the time where you grew up and refrained from it all.

Interesting, a candidate for Commander in Chief who likely would have been barred from enlisting in the military, the pot and alcohol likely to get a pass, but the coke sounds like more than a single experiment. Had he been accepted, forget much of a security clearance, many occupations closed to him, including MP.

Oh well, the good news, he didn't try to enlist.

Doesn’t matter what race the person saying it is. IMO even a black person making those comments is a racist. A racist comment is a racist comment.

No. Who would want to get high with her?

Anyone desperate enough to try to hit that later on.

Hillary has went on record as saying she never used illegal drugs. I believe Barbara Olson’s book says she’s lying.

Yep. This is old news. Obama mentioned in his book back in 2003 that he did coke.
