The anti-war phonies [Anti-war Vet reveals anti-war groups not anti-war just anti-Bush/GOP]

The anti-war phonies

By JOHN BRUHNS

I CAME HOME from Iraq in February 2004 and since then have fought tooth and nail for an end to the war.

I did so because I believe the war is immoral and illegal. I aligned myself with some high- profile lobbying organizations who I believed would have the most significant impact on ending the war. In doing so, I detached myself from the people of this country who are honestly committed to ending the war.

I traded my convictions for "special interest" groups who sometimes seem to be in place simply to smear those who disagree with their political agenda. But the agenda is not anti-war. The war is used by these organizations as ammunition against political foes - primarily Republicans. They are the enemy despite the fact that many Democrats vote the same way.

It was very hard for me to go "off the reservation." I didn't want to face the fact that these anti-war groups had other aims.

We watched as legislation that had no substantial impact on ending the war was debated. There ARE anti-war resolutions still floating out there that call for a real end to the war, but the groups I worked for wouldn't spend one dime to promote legislation considered out of the mainstream of the Democratic Party.

Any genuine anti-war message was filtered through media consultants who provide politically correct "talking points" to veterans for them to carry out a phony message that is beneficial to the campaign.

We threatened Republicans with "political extinction" if they didn't change their votes on Iraq. It was a partisan tactic that got us nowhere fast.

When I worked with these organizations, I did nothing to actually stop the war. I only put on a good show that would catch the attention of the media. We focused on America's desire for entertainment rather than the core issue of ending the war.

Our troops are still being killed on a daily basis and the main agenda of these well-financed anti-war groups, I think, is nothing short of the prolonged character assassination of all those who disagree with their message. In my eyes, it's just as bad as those who fight for a continuation of the war, and I'm no longer able to distinguish between the two sides.

I was not honest when I walked away and pursued the "lone wolf" route. Instead I painted a rosy picture of my departure in order to preserve my credibility and longevity within the establishment. This confession is the only way to restore my integrity. So I can go on to continue to fight against the war in Iraq with a clear conscience.

I didn't commit eight years of honorable military service to this country to be an indirect proxy of one political party. I saw the damage done to our country for most of the last seven years with the Republicans in control of the executive, legislative and judicial branches. There was no political balance whatsoever to keep our democracy pure. That's why we are so divided as a nation, and I'm not about to fight for the same partisan domination for the Democrats - even though that is my party affiliation.

THE Democrats promised they would bring change if given a majority in Congress. It didn't happen, and I'm not going to be fooled again. There are many courageous Democrats who vote to end the war in Iraq. But there are many who do not.

Republicans in Congress, for the most part, would follow George W. Bush to the gates of hell. And because of their unity, they are able to keep prevailing despite being in the minority of both houses of Congress.

If any candidate wants my vote, they first and foremost need to convince me that they will end the war in Iraq.

It’s a free country. He served 8 years in the military, he’s entitled to have an opinion about the war. At least he recognized he was being used and got out of it.

Bruhns spent time with Code Pink, MoveOn, Vote Vets and Americas Aganist Escalation. And briefly with John Edwards.

Goldi Locks could make a decision quicker than Bruhns.

It is neither. All the wishing in Bruhns' world won't change that.

True, but his activism endangers the very ones he wants to protect. If he can't see that, he has a very poor grasp on the nature of war today.

At least he recognized he was being used and got out of it.

Small miricles are still appreciated.

The only real way to end the war in Iraq is to win it. Just leaving is choosing to lose.

Follow Bush to the gates of hell? Republican unity? This guy really does have a hard time seeing reality. It's no wonder he was a useful idiot for the left. I wonder whose b*tch he is now.

I think everyone is missing the point. It's true that many Democrats and people on the left are ONLY "anti-war" as a way to attack their political opponents, and Bush.

Often is is politically motivated, they use it as a character assasination and a way to hate on the "evil right."... instead of being genuinely opposed to this kind of war.

Remember when Clinton's war was going on? I don't remember the same amount of anti-war protests from the left then. So, the writer does have a point that the movement from the left is not always sincere.

Isn't it interesting that this only becomes an issue when it is the Republicans in charge?

As Tonto said to the Lone Ranger when surrounded by thousands of blood thirsty braves, "What do you mean "we" white man?"

I'm always said that the anti-war groups are not anti-war. That they do support war by America's enemies against America. The war is just another opportunity to get their "hate on" against the USA.

It's as simple as going to a "peace march" and counting and noting all the OTHER grievences the participants have against this country and what other groups and countries their signs, banners and flags support.

And thank the media [snicker] for their great coverage of that so that the American public is so well informed and knows of it.

Thats what I got out of this little piece too. The writer, to me, appears confused. He is complaining that the only real purpose of those he has now detached himself was anti-anyone that disagreed with their agenda by saying:

“I think, is nothing short of the prolonged character assassination of all those who disagree with their message.”

But then makes several statements showing he is no different. He lost me with this statement altogether...
“Republicans in Congress, for the most part, would follow George W. Bush to the gates of hell.”
He has not restored his integrity but has accomplished making it more muddy.

I’m reminded of the young marine that stood up with his mommy at the last Democratic debates in Las Vegas.

He was wearing his “Operation Iraq Freedom” hat, but crying about the war and having to go overseas.

If he’s so ashamed of the war, then why was he wearing his OIF hat? Either it’s something to be proud of or it isn’t.

And having his mommy hold his hand was just pathetic.

The anti-American pukes have come to realize how much graditude and respect mainstream America has for the troops and have made a conscious decision to steal that goodwill for their purposes.

That the uses to which they put that stolen honor to work leads to more KIA doesn't bother them. I know that from many conversations with these bastards.

It is very much gauling that they use the memory of the fallen while ignoring the families of the fallen. Families have contacted them, but the peace bastards still use names over the objections of the families of the fallen.

First, I thank the writer for his service.

However, the writer is evidently ignorant of the fact that we don't live in a democracy. We have a republic - if we can keep it.

Finally, the author insists he was dishonest when he first walked away from the agitator groups, but is being honest now. When someone admits to lying, which part is the lie? The original, or the mea culpa?

The military doesn't go to another planet to recruit or fishes in a separate gene pool. Of course it tends to appeal to the patriotic, even conservative type folks, but it's still a mix of every type of American.

So you're going to get misfits like Bruhns, even Sandinista Marxists like Camilo Mejia the Chairman of the Iraq Veterans Against the War.

Thank God it,s 10% and not half like in civilian society.

We were going to do it this summer, but we had some things going on that prohibited it a little. :-)
