Huckabee the most Reagan-like GOP candidate?

A British author and political observer has written a new book that compares the current Republican presidential candidates to the one they want to be compared to -- Ronald Reagan.

Nicholas Wapshott, founding editor of London's Times, recently published a book called Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher: A Political Marriage. Wapshott has spent a great deal of time comparing the current top-tier GOP candidates to the Reagan model and says former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani falls far short, while Fred Thompson, John McCain, and even Mitt Romney have some Reagan characteristics. But Wapshott says former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee is the closest match -- especially in one important category.

"Like Reagan, he is a true Christian. He has very sure principles. I mean, he's a Baptist minister," says Wapshott. "In the same way ... Reagan learned many of his core values in his family and from his mother's church. [Reagan's] mother was from the Disciples of Christ [denomination] in Dixon, Illinois, where Ronald Reagan learned all his fundamental beliefs."

The author believes Huckabee would be much different than the presumptive Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton.

"Look at the way that he is so different from Hillary Clinton, too. Huckabee is an open-hearted, honest-looking, and honest-sounding regular sort of guy -- so very different from that sort of chilly calculation that you get from Mrs. Clinton," he points out. "So he might turn out to be actually a very good national candidate."

Wapshott believes that like Reagan, Huckabee has great communication skills. He adds that Huckabee, whom he describes as "spectacularly underestimated," has the ability to "come right through" television screens and make the viewers feel as though he is talking directly to them -- another skill he says Reagan had.

Unlike Reagan, Huckabee is no conservative. Come to think of it, he’s no Reagan either.

Where’s Lloyd Bentsen when you need him?

Actually, I think he may be the most Jimmy Carter-like candidate.

I live in Arkansas and Huckabee is most like Bill Clinton rather than Ronald Reagan.
Complete fraud and anything but a True Conservative.

The Iron Lady and RR saved a continent from Soviet domination.

Hey Hucksterbe, what have you done for your country lately?

Huck is not up to being president. Evangelicals want him because he is a Baptist Christian. They need to look at his governing record and see he is a lib in every way except abortion and gay marriage. He and the Catholic Church agree on illegals—it is our Christian duty to welcome them. Never mind that it is against the law of the land. I for one, want a Pres. willing to uphold the Constitution not interpret a “living document” according to his beliefs.vaudine

Reagan was positive and upbeat on America. If that’s what Huckabee is, then he’s like Reagan that way and none of the rest come close. The Ds are all exceedingly negative and the Rs less so but still not as upbeat about America as Reagan was.

Reagan allowed an amnesty for illegals during his presidency, so I’m not sure Reagan-like is good casting for this election.

Two things I haven noticed since Fred Thompson entered the race:

1) Any and every action by Thompson is portrayed as a "stumble" or "blunder"; and his campaign is always portrayed as "falling apart", "losing momentum", or "beset by conflict", all while he rises in the polls

2) Mike Huckabee is featured, praised, profiled and lauded by a breathless MSM, extolled for his "conservatism", "faith in Christ", "Reagan-like qualities", while completely and totally ignoring, in every single article, his stunning record on illegal immigration, embarrassing comments to Hispanic "rights" groups, and very un-Conservative nanny-state policies as governor of AK.

Is it just my imagination?

Yes Reagan did that. Reagan also said he would share Star-Wars technology with the Soviets. I hated that. Reagan wasn’t perfect. No candidate is. It is always a matter of weighing all the pro’s and con’s of each candidate against the others to perform a comparative analysis. Compared to Hillary just about any of these flawed candidates is better.

Well, Huckabee doesn’t believe the same things that Reagan believes on a huge range of issues.

1) Global warming
2) A nationwide ban on smoking
3) limiting pay of corporate executives
4) Subsidizing vegetables and fruits to make people eat more of them
5) replace replace light bulbs with the fluorescent types
6) not only wanted to increase taxes in Arkansas, but didn’t care which ones that he wanted to increase

The Ds are all exceedingly negative . . .

It's not that surprising.

The Rats pollute America with their negative thinking because, without new crises that supposedly only they are capable of solving, usually through increasing taxes and making more regulations, they have nothing.

Much of the Rat Party is in the very advanced stages of a mental disease called Socialism. Hopefully, the Republicans will not succumb to this disease, too, but I fear that they may be in the early stages already.
