Mike Huckabee is learning what a target feels like.
A day after a Washington Post poll of Iowa voters found him in a statistical tie for the lead with former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, Huckabee's critics have turned aggressive.
The Web site factcheck.org published a blistering critique of his fiscal record, saying he regularly "misrepresents" his actions as governor of Arkansas.
"He frequently says he cut taxes "almost 94 times" but leaves out the 21 taxes raised during his tenure," the Web site found. "In the end, he presided over a net tax increase."
The analysis found that Huckabee was misleading the public by saying a tax hike took place after a voter referendum. ("The tax was enacted before a referendum vote on highway repairs," the site found.)
They also concluded that he referred to a "fee" on nursing homes, when "he himself had called it the 'bed tax.'"
Those are the messages that his opponents--particularly Romney and former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson--are eager to see publicized. Romney has staked his campaign on a victory in Iowa, where he's been leading for months. And Thompson's flagging campaign sees Huckabee in the way of a surprise in the state.
Until recently, Huckabee has been left untouched. Profiles of him have tended to focus on his sense of humor, his history as a baptist minister and his guitar playing.
But now, a darker narrative is emerging.
In addition to Huckabee's record on taxes--for which he has been hammered mercilessly by the Club for Growth--rival campaigns are now peddling information about Huckabee's personal ethics.
Reporters are being directed to years-old ethics complaints in Arkansas, including the inappropriate use of government computers, planes and PAC money. [...]

Huckabee is a lying disengenuous con man!!
“The Choirboy” lies like a rug!!
Could it be that as he becomes more visible, people want to REALLY look at who he is?
When candidates are not percieved as viable whatsoever, they are not scrutinized. When they become visible, people wonder who the REALLY are.
Yep......
Why didn’t the Washington Post mention my attacks? I feel so unloved. I need a hug.
No, a guitar playing happy go lucky Southern Baptist!!! LOL
Traditional, I wish that people were as this sentence describes. But most Americans are walking the earth wondering if they are smarter than a 5th grader. Imagine if there really was scrutiny into these choices?

I wonder if they are smarter than a 5th grader too!
Next time I'm in your part of Jersey, I'll buy you a beer, will that do?
It might help. We can toast and drown my sorrows over the fact that nobody in the MSM hates me. They don’t even know I exist. Waaaahhhh!!!!
How’d you know I lived in the DPRNJ BTW?
Those polls we see now are merely the indication of what each PARTIES' voters think of the selected candidates. Most of the candidates have zero chance of winning the nomination, and no National appeal whatsoever.
This seems more an exercise in futility, as the Party itself knows who has the most money support, and most owed to which donors, and that is the determinate for the nominee.
I have my hope for who the Republicans will get selected as the nominee (my personal opinion is that it's a done deal, and we are just going through the motions as an exercise in futility to get worked up about one or the other of the non-factors in the end).
I scoffed a bit the time, but soon realized how right on the source was, as the campaign rolled on. And it allowed me to scoop other local media.
I wonder whether there's anythinng to the filings....Gov. Huckabee has some of the same strings attached to him that Billy had.
Bud Light presents: "REAL MEN OF GENIUS"
(Real men of genius)
Today we salute you, Mr. Mike Huckabee paid FR campaign shill!
(Mr. Mike Huckabee paid FR campaign shill)
What does a liberal Republican do when he is afraid to face grass roots conservatives himself? He pays his coffee and errand boy minimum wage to do it for him...
(skim milk with three sweet and lows)
Scanning the information superhighway you search Conservative websites like the NY Times, Washington Post, Salon and Daily Kos looking for favorable articles about the Huckster to post on FR
(oooh, here's one from DU!)
Armed with nothing but talking points from your candidates' website, you attempt to convince conservatives that your candidate is not a Christian socialist or a pro-life Democrat...
(Jesus would want amnesty for illegals)
When FReepers say Huck is a fiscal liberal, algore loving environmental wacko, open border amnesty pusher, nanny state smoker banner you provide the brilliant original response...a link to his campaign website
(copy, paste, copy, paste)
Conservatives? We don't need no stinkin' Conservatives!
(Highly overrated)
All we need is a leftist who is pro-life, has an R next to his name, and talks about Jesus.
(Praise the Lord!)
So crack open an ice cold Bud Light, oh Karl Rove of the blogosphere, because when a FReeper runs for office, we'll be calling you...
