Some people has asked me if we have a similar celebration in Britain, as such we do not but historically there was our Harvest Thanksgiving/Festival which is more of a religious celebration and giving thanks for the safe completion of the harvest. Many years ago farmers used to have local vicars actually bless the crop as the last lot was harvested, then followed a service and a large harvest tea to which all farm workers and their children were invited and often poorer children from the local community got invitations to the large and wealthy farms harvest celebrations.

Today it is more of a church or school service where there is a display of food and the Harvest Loaf is the centre of the display, following links are the history of our Harvest festival and how schools today celebrate it. Normally after the service the food is distributed to the local community.

Harvest Festival in the UK

A typical school celebration

Today though I joined my friends in the States and had a Thanksgiving Meal.

Melon and Black Forest ham for starter

Duck for main course

Trifle for desert

Happy Thanksgiving, snugs!!!

We are thankful for the friendship of the U.K. It is very important to us.

I have a new recipe for a two potato gratin that we had today which was easy and delicious. I wish I could do pictures the way you can do.

Thank you snugs! That was really interesting and I loved the photos of your food. Thank you for posting the Dose tonight, too!!!

I made my favorite ...sounds stupid, but I love 'em... All-Bran Muffins - so good warm out of the oven, with lots of butter!

can’t complain about the duck as that is one of my favorites. I had duck on sunday actually as part of an annual Dinner.

I don’t celebrate Thanksgiving on thursday so our big turkey meal is friday night. There’s a nice turkey soup on the stove right now and it has that rich turkey smell that I love. I made it with lots of onions, garlic, paprika, thyme and bay.

The stuffing this year will be made from whole wheat and regular challa, mushrooms and pine nuts. My friend brought a lemon meringue pie to go with the pumpkin pie, the pecan pie and the dutch apple pie that we received from my aunt’s mother.

Your Thanksgiving meal looks delicious!

I love the smell of church during Harvest Festival - all those 'mums and sheaves of wheat. Lovely!

Love the hymns too......"Praise o praise our God and King, Hymns of adoration sing; For His mercies aye endure; Ever faithfull ever sure."
