AN Australian commando has been killed in a battle with Taliban forces in Afghanistan – the third Australian combat death there in the past two months.

Private Luke Worsley, 26, of the 4RAR commando unit in Sydney, was killed in action about 7.30am (AEDT) today, Defence force chief Angus Houston said.

"It is with deep sorrow that I inform you of the death of an Australian soldier serving with the special operations taskforce in Afghanistan," Air Chief Marshal Houston said.

"He was participating in a planned and deliberate attack by our forces against Taliban leaders and bomb makers in Oruzgan province."

Air Chief Marshal Houston said no other Australian troops were killed or wounded in the protracted engagement at a Taliban compound.

"This mission specifically targeted bomb makers that improvise explosive devices or IEDs," he said.

"IED's are weapons that don't discriminate and they are as much a danger to innocent Afghan civilians as they are to military forces.

"We will continue to go after the bomb makers."

It is with deep sorrow that yet another has had to die in the seemingly endless pursuit of goodness. Though if not for goodness, what? For it's antithesis, evil? Or just for the sake of an uncaring universe?

Well, the universe has structure yet, which would seem to allow evil as but a human alternative for it. Thus for a life given for structure and not it's antithesis, and hence for God.

If there's a trip one way, he said,
Into battle grim for me,
Don't let them say when I am dead:
He died to save democracy;
Nor let them say: He fought to free
Enslaved nations, white or brown;
Just print these simple words for me:

He would not let his cobbers down.
