Any time someone mentions gout and pottery in the same paragraph, I start thinking of a cause other than genetics, namely lead poisoning. The high prevalence of gout in 18th and 19th century England among the aristocracy could be directly traced to the consumption of port stored in vessels contaminated with lead. It wasn't the rich food. Saturnine gout or gout associated with lead toxicity, has been well described in medical literature. Early in my medical training, I saw it commonly in a lower class of patient, namely those who consumed moonshine whiskey.

Moonshiners in the south frequently used discarded car radiators to cool their distillate thus contaminating the moonshine with lead. Treatment of the lead toxicity often resulted in permanent resolution of the gout.
