Joel Dykstra may be at the foot of the mountain, but hes climbing hard.
The little-known Republican candidate for U.S. Senate from South Dakota says hes driven 22,000 miles since beginning his campaign in July.
Theres probably 400,000 people who are going to vote in the general election, and today theres a few thousand of them who even know Im alive, Dykstra said this week during his first visit with The Daily Republic editorial board. The secret at this point is to try to get introduced to more and more people around South Dakota.

I wish Tim Johnson a full recovery and Joel Dykstra an election night victory in 2008, as does everyone on FR.
Absolutely. This senate seat should be top-priority for GOP (along with LA seat), and a lot of efforts and money should be poured there. However, after seeing pathetic 2006 GOP campaign I’m not too positive.
They need to stop propping up duds like Chaffee. Had the effort put forth for this knucklehead been spent in Montana Conrad Burns would have won reelection.
In a state the size of a single congressional district, I don’t know why we don’t go for it anyway. Go ahead and put money in the race. We run people in congressional races that aren’t well known to begin with. Sheesh, we gotta stop conceding the Dakotas (Daschle excepted) all the time. And Baucus, we should be going after him too. If they can knock off Burns with a virtual nobody, we shouldn’t be sitting on our tails on this one.
Bravo....well said!!!
” If they can knock off Burns with a virtual nobody, we shouldnt be sitting on our tails on this one.”
Actually, Conrad Burns largely engineered his own defeat.
*Sigh* Yeah, that’s true. I just think we should try anyway. Again, Montana, population wise, is the size of a single congressional district, and we’ve attempted runs and won against Democrat congressmen who weren’t unpopular. I mean, we really do need to open up more fronts against the Democrats, but except for LA, we’re in a pickle.
