China Refused Kitty Hawk's Stay in Hong Kong due to Naval Exercise Aimed at Taiwan

(Hong Kong = Yonhap News) Chung Ju-ho = Ming Bao of Hong Kong reported on Nov. 24 that large-scale Naval Exercise by PLAN is a reason why China refused U.S. carrier Kitty Hawk's scheduled stay in Hong Kong for a while.

According to sources, PLAN's Eastern and Southern Fleet conducted large-scale joint military exercise recently in the area of Pacific east of Taiwan, and north of Philippines, practicing hypothetical blockade of Taiwan.

Russian-made missile frigates and submarines, 022 stealth missiles, and anti-ship cruise missiles were all deployed in this exercise, while China's indigenously developed AWACS were reportedly spotted in the sky above Nanjing.

Airspace control of eastern and southern coastal area, which will end on Nov. 25, is also said to be related to this naval exercise. Since Nov. 20, airspace control has been in effect in the sky over cities of eastern coast, resulting in hours of delay of local air flights.

Sources reportedly said that, during the exercise, some Chinese ships ran into Kitty Hawk's battle group in the international waters, sailing toward Hong Kong.

Kitty Hawk was due to enter Hong Kong on the morning of Nov. 21 in time for Thanksgiving Day holidays starting Nov. 22, but China refused it at the last minute without any explanation. Then they reversed their decision on Nov. 22, allowing the entry.

Admiral Timothy Keating, Commander, U.S. Pacific Command, said Chinese decision is "dismaying and worrisome," and China had refused entry of another U.S. Navy ships a few days before.

Two torpedo removal ships of U.S. Navy reportedly ran into bad weather in South China Sea at the time and asked the stay in Hong Kong and fuel supply but China refused.

In short, China wanted to hide the details of their naval exercise and combat capability by refusing the stay of Kitty Hawk in Hong Kong, whose battle group boasts sophisticated information-gathering ability.

Despite China's change of the decision, Kitty Hawk has already returned to Yokosuka, Japan, and its 8,000 sailors had to spend Thanksgiving Day on board on Nov. 22.

I supposed that this is China's response to Taiwan's talk of independence and nuke program. On the other hand, China is going to do this drill anyway.

This decision was reversed —

Nice of you to do a translation, but a regular news search might have been more productive.

The reason I did the translation is that none of English-language report says the naval exercise aspect. I think that this is more than a diplomatic snub to send a message.

China was conducting large-scale military exercise for blockade of Taiwan. They imposed flight ban on eastern coastal area, causing lots of flight delays, because of this exercise.

Both flight ban and Kitty Hawk incident can be nicely explained by this naval exercise.

This translated article shows the real picture behind these incidents.

“China Reverses, OKs U.S. Aircraft Carrier to Enter Hong Kong for Thanksgiving Hours After Sailors Left”
Thursday, November 22, 2007

AP

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “HONG KONG — China said thousands of American sailors on board a flotilla of U.S. warships could spend Thanksgiving in Hong Kong as planned, but Thursday’s message came hours after the ships had already left after earlier being refused entry to the city’s port.”

“ARTICLE SNIPPET: “This is a surprise,” Zweig said. “I haven’t heard of ships being turned away like this before. I’m also disappointed and saddened for the families who have flown here expecting to see their relatives and are not now going to have their reunions.””

This translated article shows the real picture behind these incidents.

Well, fine.

However, YOU left out the whole story -- and therefore was misleading -- by translating an article that does NOT tell the final outcome — that the Kitty Hawk group was allowed to dock for Thanksgiving.

Also, read the articles I linked. They told a great deal about the problems with the Chinese navy and the Kitty Hawk carrier group.

“U.S. commander ‘perplexed’ by China’s refusal of warship visit”
HONOLULU, Hawaii (AP)

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “China later reversed its decision, but by that time the aircraft carrier, along with four warships and a nuclear submarine, were already leaving the area under heavy weather. The vessels chose not to turn around. The Kitty Hawk and its strike group were on their way back to Yokosuka on Friday, a U.S. Navy offical said.

Beijing has given no reason why it refused the ships entry.”

I don't think that you read the entire article.

"Kitty Hawk was due to enter Hong Kong on the morning of Nov. 21 in time for Thanksgiving Day holidays starting Nov. 22, but China refused it at the last minute without any explanation. Then they reversed their decision on Nov. 22, allowing the entry."

This is quoted from the article above. It says that China did reverse the decision, even if it was too late by then.

The post above is about why China initially refused the entry.

They told a great deal about the problems with the Chinese navy and the Kitty Hawk carrier group.

This is not true. Both articles say a great deal about some diplomatic angle such as retaliation of Dalai Lama incident. Nowhere do they mention any run-in between Kitty Hawk battle group and Chinese navy.

There is no reference whatsoever on Chinese navy ships doing exercise for blockade of Taiwan.

that the Kitty Hawk group was allowed to dock for Thanksgiving.

Incorrect. The Kitty Hawk battle group never docked in Hong Kong. They had already begun their return voyage to Yokosuka when China lifted the ban on the port call. A "regular news search might have been more productive" and stopped you from making a false claim. By the way, those ships don't dock in Hong Kong. They anchor in the harbor and transport their crews to Fenwick pier via launches.

I was informed this yesterday indirectly, which air control in the eastern region of China was under the government control indicating possible excercise near Taiwan. Kitty Hawk is heading home, probably with possibility to pass nearby the spot where the training is ongoing, if not over yet. Will the Kitty Hawk be able to monitor the training? Was this a coincidence?

“Officials decry port denial”
By Bill Gertz
November 24, 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Pentagon and military officials were stunned by China’s abrupt decision on Wednesday to disallow the carrier visit, which was planned for at least a month and timed for the holiday.

“This was a most unfortunate incident that we are still working to better understand,” Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said, adding that it is “premature” to say whether military exchanges with China will be cut back as a result.

However, Adm. Timothy J. Keating, commander of U.S. forces in the Pacific, told reporters in Hawaii that China’s decision is a setback for U.S. military relations with Beijing and is not in line with plans for increased exchanges.”

Who know? I do think, though, that SIGINT crews of Kitty Hawk battle group may not have the time to enjoy Thanksgiving. Their turkey could be still waiting for them.:-)
