NY Governor Suffers First-Term Blunders [New Yorkers hate him]
Associated Press ^ | November 23, 2007 | Michael Gormley

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - He was once untouchable. Eliot Spitzer barreled into the New York governor's office barely 11 months ago riding a record-setting wave of popularity. Time magazine had named him "Crusader of the Year" when he was attorney general and the tabloids proclaimed him "Eliot Ness."

The "Sheriff of Wall Street" who had made corporate titans cower then pay up for their misdeeds was going to take the same no-nonsense approach to fixing one of the country's worst governments.

But then he got to work, and hasn't had but a handful of good days since. At the Capitol, he's been hit with scandal and derided as a rich brat who doesn't play well with others. "Eliot's Mess," mocked the tabloids.

The low point came two weeks ago when, battered in the polls and amid concerns that he was threatening to unhinge Hillary Rodham Clinton's presidential bid, he surrendered on his plan to give driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.

Instead of a rising political star, he is now seen as the standard for rapid political collapse.

His tumble has been reflected in the polls. A week ago, a Siena College poll found 64 percent of New Yorkers had a negative rating of his job performance. In January, 75 percent of New Yorkers viewed him favorably. A year after he was elected with a historic 69 percent of the vote, New Yorkers by a 2:1 margin said they wouldn't re-elect him in 2010.

one of the country's worst governments. Based on what criteria?

You don't live in NY, if you are asking that question!

Spitzer is OK except for one small flaw... the dude is clinically insane. He lives to be a thug, and he is a totalitarian paranoid rage freak.

Sarkozy for Governor! (Its legal)

I certainly hope they “hate “ him enough to never elect a Democrat again. :)

Spitzer showed his arrogance with his prosecutions or attempted ones as Attorney General of NY.

He leveled threats against Wall Street and even struck out at crisis pregnancy centers that provide alternatives to abortion.

That’s one Spitzer backed off of quick.

He’s a Hugo Chavez wannabe.

Isn’t the evidence in his spying on his political opponents alone just enough to raise your suspicions.

if little boy eliot ran tomorrow against abe lincoln in my home state he still would win by a landslide; this is the state of the far left empire state today and it’s going to get a lot worse when hillary is coronated queen of america in 2008.

I would like to remind everyone that Bloomberg was hated as Mayor of NYC in the years after his election.

Over time, New Yorkers fogot and forgave Bloomberg, re-electing him.

Mario Cuomo was hated as governor of NY in the first year or two after each election, but he always turned things around and won an easy re-election each time (except the last).

Democrats have figured out that you reveal your true agenda in the first year or two after your election, then run back to the middle and blame conservatives for all your woes in order to get re-elected.

They don't.

New York is a socialist state and that won't change. Just the other day one of the local papers ran a poll asking if the licenses for illegal aliens fiasco would hurt Spitzer's ability to govern for the rest of his term and an overwhelming majority said "no".

New York is lost.

Based on the highest taxes, lowest employment, the stranglehold of unions, the fleeing businesses, corruption of monumental proportions. Did I miss anything?

Normally I would rise to the defense of Massachusetts but with the Red Sox and Patriots, I think that keeps us out of the bottom. So, it comes down to New York,Louisiana with Massachusetts in third. Although I think Louisiana is getting Bobby Jindal, so by default, sort of, New York wins..er..loses.. You know what I mean. Congratulations.

Based on what criteria?

One 2004 study labeled the New York legislature as the least deliberative and most dysfunctional in the country.

And now we've hired a governor to reinforce it.

“First term blunders” is not the correct description. It’s the description that only the AP could give. For one thing, this charleton is not going to have more than one term. For another thing, it has nothing to do with his inexperience. It’s in his very nature to be a b@stard.
