Washington Post ^ | November 26, 2007 | Susan Levine

The first statistics ever amassed on HIV in the District, released today in a sweeping report, reveal "a modern epidemic" remarkable for its size, complexity and reach into all parts of the city.

The numbers most starkly illustrate HIV's impact on the African American community. More than 80 percent of the 3,269 HIV cases identified between 2001 and 2006 were among black men, women and adolescents. Among women who tested positive, a rising percentage of local cases, nine of 10 were African American.

The District's AIDS rate is the worst of any city in the country, nearly twice the rate in New York and more than four times the incidence in Detroit, and it has been climbing faster than that of many jurisdictions.

Its just like Africa. Blacks receive less attention from the Democrats than Gays. That's their reward for remaining on the Plantation.

What per-cent does the black population of D.C. comprise?

Could someone remind me...how is AIDS transmitted? Is it by inadequate hand-washing? No,that’s colds and flu. Is it by failing to wash lettuce, tomatoes, etc before making a salad? No,that’s “the runs”.Is it by......

Socialized medicine is going to give more and more to people that contribute less and less.

The story should actually measure the epidemic using John Kerry supporters. Voters in Washington, DC cast 89.7% of their ballots for the Democrat in 2004.

I’ve always understood AIDS to be transmitted by not caring enough or not wearing a ribbon on AIDS day... I could be wrong.

As long as “what goes on in DC. stays in DC”, who cares?

People who get HIV most often get it because of their own choices...

Why don't people post with a decent excerpt anymore? You do know you can post 300 words of this don't you? Try snipping the more profound parts so we don't all have to go to the Washington comPost.

But here is the real problem with the "War on AIDS":

Given the scope of HIV and AIDS in the District, health leaders say they can't focus on just one aspect of the disease or one at-risk group.

"We don't have the luxury of only picking one," Hader said. "We have the imperative to do it all."

Can't focus on the homo, needle-using minorites I'm afraid.

Its everybody’s fault. I wonder if the numbers are overinflated as much as the UN numbers are.

Low tax rates and inadequate school lunch programs spread HIV, but this is distinct from full-blown AIDS. AIDS is caused by cuts in funding for midnight basketball games.

This D. C. epidemic is another good reason to give the District the status of a state with two Democrat senators. That way, more tax dollars can be funneled there to care for the victims.
