Making sex legal at 16 in line with rest of Britain 'would hurt the vulnerable'
Gay rights campaigners have clashed with Belfast's Rape Crisis Centre over plans to lower the age of sexual consent to 16. The British government has published proposals to bring Northern Ireland's legal process, under which it is illegal for 16-year-olds to have sex, into line with the rest of the UK.
The centre has joined a loose alliance with the Catholic church, evangelical Protestant churches and Ian Paisley's Democratic Unionist Party to oppose the proposed change from 17 to 16. Ranged against them are organisations representing the gay community.
Eileen Calder, director of the centre, defended its decision to resist changes to the sexual offences law. 'On many issues we have been on the opposite side of the DUP and the Catholic church, in areas like abortion, where the centre is pro-choice. But on other issues, such as pornography, we have worked with the churches in campaigning against sexploitation,' she said.
'Our concern is to protect vulnerable young men and women from older sexual predators. The 17 age limit has never been used to prosecute, say, a man of 16 who gets his 15-year-old girlfriend pregnant. What we are concerned about is men in their 20s, 30s, 40s and older preying on young people. And that applies to the gay community as well as the heterosexual community.'

NAMBLA to the rescue. (Well, wouldn’t doubt it, fellow travelers and all, even if it is Britain) It’s only a matter of time before these groups demand all age limits be done away with.

The reason that I despise Elton John is that he was the headliner at an event, some number of years back, the purpose of which was to raise money to lobby for lowering the age of consent. I think it is a safe bet to assume that the perverts will keep working at this until there is no legal age limit for consent.
Then raise the age of consent to 18 and enforce it.
If the age of consent is 16, then the age of consent is 16.
That means if a 16 year old consents to have sex witha 90 year old, then thats just the way the law is.
Liberals are so weird. They want a low age of consent of 16 but not for people who are 20 with people who are 16?
So between ages of 16 and 19 consensual sex is OK.
But we don't want them exploited by those who are experienced with sex?
I don't get the logic here on what they consider to be exploitation.
What is exploitation?
Why not make exploitation the crime?

Yes, but only for heterosexual sex when the couple is legally married. Otherwise make the age of consent 21 for heterosexual sex.
Are far as homosexual sex, there should be no age of consent because it should be illegal at any age.
If you ban sex with underaged boys, a substantial portion of the UK gay community will be forced into celebacy. Now, if we can only force the rest of them into celebacy we could get rid of STDs.

Indeed, but one can always hope for a better and sensible world.
I suspect you're misconstruing the efforts of a few years ago to bring England's homosexual age of consent, then 18, in line with that of heterosexuals, then 16. It question of equality under law. As reflected in this story, it's now 16 for age of consent regardless of the partner's sexes.
A quick look suggests you state of Maryland appears to have an age of consent of 16 with no apparently separate restriction on homosexuals.

My state, a cesspool of rule by Rats, is hardly the standard I would like to see for the rest of the civilized world.
The legal angle you point out may well be accurate in terms of law, but I stand by my assessment of the plans of the perverts — of both the homosexual and the heterosexual varieties.
Or teachers.
