The cruel "sport" of horse fighting has been outlawed almost worldwide

In other news, Michael Vick has a new venture for his close friends and colleagues.

I don’t want to hear about the Chinese watching horse fights. A generation or two ago they were eating the flesh of people who were deemed to be enemies of communism and Chairman Mao, and we hardly heard a peep.

A historian wrote something to the effect that China was the only civilization in history that made the decision to live by only by reason, without God or gods.

Would be hilarious if David Gregory covered this story.

Disgusting. I have no sympathy for PETA or their lunacies, but tormenting animals - dogs, horses, bulls, whatever - for amusement is vile. People who enjoy the spectacle of animals being abused and tortured show an inability to empathize with or acknowledge the suffering of others - and for some it may only be a matter of time before they graduate to enjoying the torment and sufferings of their fellow humans.

"Horror as Chinese horses are forced to fight to the death"

I would expect no less from the Chinese. And, based on information contained in a recent posting regarding Japanese treatment and summary execution of American prisoners during WWII, the same applies to them. I am sure that there are probably exceptions but, by and large, they are unsatisfactory as a people.

“They were taken in Guizhou province in south-west China, where local people claim such events are a part of a 500-year-old tradition.”

Like eating the brains of live monkeys.

Some people still haven;t advanced from that stage of primative savagery we left when bear and bull baiting were outlawed in Britain.

People get so upset about this stuff, but have you ever seen how wild mustang stallions treat each other, particularly during the mating season? It ain't pretty.

The animal kingdom is a savage principality. Domestication of these creatures is a very thin veneer of civilization. Nature is, on the whole, cruel and deadly. There's a reason we call people like Jeffrey Dahmer and OJ "animals."

How come you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink yet you can make him fight to the death ?

This pun practically writes itself, but isn't this post simply flogging a dead horse?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=395200&in_page_id=1770

Nearly the same article, carried by the same newspaper, with photographs of the same event, and citing the same "expert" was written over a year ago but by different authors. It's interesting because despite the same topic being covered the two articles have somewhat contradictory information.

Compare this "Sometimes the fights last 10 minutes – sometimes they go on for half an hour. It’s not normally a fight to the death but occasionally animals have to be put down." The Miao people, the fifth largest of 56 ethnic groups recognised by the People’s Republic of China, regard the fighting as ‘thrilling, exciting and fascinating.’ One guide explains how two teams of horses, specially selected to be ‘plump, sturdy and energetic,’ are led to the arena and then pitted against each other one by one. They bite each other, turn their hooves and kick the other side heavily. The nervous and fierce fight makes audiences hold their breath or cheer and applaud loudly from time to time," says the guide. If one horse falls down or runs away, the other one is declared the winner and another two take their place. The winning horses then fight each other. The last two battle it out to be champion. While the losers are led away to lick their wounds, the sweat-soaked champion is draped in red while his owner ‘feels very proud for having such a brave and strong steed.'

to this The stallions are driven into a frenzy by the simple ploy of leading them to a mare in heat, then taking her away when they are roused. Mares are often injected with hormones to keep them in heat longer. If they are still reluctant when the mare is removed, they are whipped, and gunshots are fired to stir them up. A losing horse is often pitted against a much stronger opponent in its next fight to ensure it dies and the spectators get the bloody finale they enjoy. Then, according to reports from some of the remote regions, the dead horse is barbecued as part of the festival.

The newer article even adds a conspiratorial tone for gullible readers claiming that the Chinese government wants to hide the photos and information from you the reader, despite the fact that a similar story with photo was published by the Chinese press, though it does not approach the issue from an animal welfare view.
