Immigration Group: Huckabee a "disaster."
Washington Times ^ | Nov. 30, '07 | Stephan Dinan

Groups that support a crackdown on illegal aliens havn't settled on their champion in the race for the White House, but there's little doubt which Republican scares them the most - former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee. "He was an absolute disaster on immigration as governor," said Roy Beck, president of NumbersUSA, a group that played a mojor role in rallying the phone calls that helped defeat this year's Senate immigration bill. "Every time there was any enforcement in his state, he took the side of the illegal aliens." Just as problematic for the former Arkansas governor, however, is that the independent interest groups that track the issue are also giving him the once-over, and don't like what they see. "Huckabee is the guy who scares the heck out of me," said Peter Gadiel, president of 9-11 Families for a Secure America, a group instrumental in fighting for the REAL ID Act that sets federal standards for driver's licenses. Some leaders said Mr. Huckabee reminded them of President Bush, who pushed for legalization of illegal aliens and a new supply of foreign guest workers, despite his base calling for better border security and enforcement. Huckabee said he's willing to take the heat for pushing for illegal alien students to be able to get taxpayer-funded financial aid and college scholarships.

Right - and the Club for Growth has documented all his tax increases when he was governor. He’s tried to worm out of the accusation - as in the last debate - but he’s not very convincing. That’s all we need - a tax and spend friend of illegal aliens!

It is one thing to read about things Mike Huckabee has said and hear others repeat it, but to watch actual video clips of Huckabee saying these things is all I need to see. He will not get my vote! Huckabee Facts.org

I think something can be said to excuse the so-called religious right on that point. At the time they were comparing Bush’s PERSONAL morality (which I don’t doubt he has) to eight years of Bubba in the Oval Office with the whore of the month. No one knew at the time (including me) that Bush was no conservative. People can’t be blamed for not knowing what they couldn’t have known at the time. But now things are different and I think we’re all wiser, including evangelicals.

I’m with you - a video clip is worth a thousand campaign sound bites!

Hillary could eat the Huckster alive in a debate by just attacking his record on illegal immigration.

Immigration Group: Huckabee a "disaster."

It may be an even bigger disaster.

Huckabee also had been in the practice of receiving large gifts; he reported a total of $112,000 in 1999, which included $23,000 in clothes from one state appointee. Huckabee responded--in an election year!--with a lawsuit to allow him to receive more gifts and another lawsuit to stop the state ethics commission from investigating him.

Huckabee's wife Janet announced she was running for secretary of state. "She insisted on a 24-hour state police detail while campaigning across the state; when that was challenged, she at first said she had no control over it, then promised to pay the cost, then said she would pay only up to $500."

Gov. Huckabee "lost some 110 pounds . . . He quit eating fried foods and sweets and started exercising regularly; he showed his progress by toting a 90-pound girl around a school gym."

Also..

From a John Fund column - "I know of no conservative he appointed while he headed the Arkansas Baptist Convention." . . . Mr. Huckabee’s reluctance to surround himself with conservatives was evident as governor, when he kept many agency heads appointed by Bill Clinton. Zac Wright, a spokesman for incoming Democratic Gov. Mike Beebe, was asked this year why 15 Huckabee agency heads had been retained. Most of them were "Clinton people," he replied, not "Huckabee people." Mr. Huckabee told me many of his agency heads had "apolitical" responsibilities.

[End quote]

I do not have a TV and have never seen images of the former governor of Arkansas Mike Huckabee. I've heard very little audio but I have read over the years of his ILLEGAL alien stance.

I am honest to say that he has the traits of a smooth talking flim-flam man. IMO.

Is he and Mrs. Huckabee another Mr. and Mrs. Clinton? Or, given his tolerance of "Clinton people" is he another Schwarzenkennedy? I truly wonder.

Wow! The more I learn the worse it becomes. I think I’ll dust off my old volume of “Elmer Gantry” by Sinclair Lewis!

Malkin's site also has a post entitled: Huckabee: I can’t compromise on scholarships for illegals because “my soul will not let me”. I think he's just 'jumped the shark' for me with that line.

Thanks for posting the link.

I’ll send it along to some friends who are beginning to buy the Huckster’s act.

Thanks for the reference. Malkin, as usual, is right. Huckabee is just an open-borders Bush-lite. As I mentioned to another FReeper, the Club for Growth has documented his many tax increases when he was governor. He’s tried to weasel his way out of it - as in the debate - but it’s not going down. Just what we need - a tax and spend friend of illegal aliens! Just learning about his record has motivated me to send Tancredo another contribution!

“Yes, I ate Big Macs and Big Whoppers but I did not swallow.” Gov. Huckabee.

I also have sent it on to friends, as Mike Huckabee is very likable and I do like him as a person. But when you see him saying his own words,http://www.huckabeefacts.org/ it is really pointing out that he is definitely not a true conservative. In fact, I believe that Romney is actually more conservative than Huckabee. It really is true, like Rush said, that Fred Thompson is the conservative among the top tier 4 candidates. Know that if Duncan Hunter were in the top tier 4 or 5, Rush would have said Thompson and Hunter are the conservatives, not moderately conservative! GO FRED, AND PICK DUNCAN AS VP!
