Threat Matrix: December 2007

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Calculating the Risks in Pakistan

A small group of U.S. military experts and intelligence officials convened in Washington for a classified war game last year, exploring strategies for securing Pakistan's nuclear arsenal if the country's political institutions and military safeguards began to fall apart.

The secret exercise — conducted without official sponsorship from any government agency, apparently due to the sensitivity of its subject — was one of several such games the U.S. government has conducted in recent years examining various options and scenarios for Pakistan's nuclear weapons: How many troops might be required for a military intervention in Pakistan? Could Pakistani nuclear bunkers be isolated by saturating the surrounding areas with tens of thousands of high-powered mines, dropped from the air and packed with anti-tank and anti-personnel munitions? Or might such a move only worsen the security of Pakistan's arsenal?

“Iranian immigrants land in Israel”

SNIPPET: “Jewish Agency’s covert mission to bring 40 Iranian Jews to build new lives in Israel ends successfully on Tuesday. Director of group donating thousands of dollars to the cause warns Iran’s Jews are in danger from Ahmadinejad’s regime: ‘Many think this too will pass, but our feeling is that this is very similar to the situation in the 1930’s’”

Roi Mandel
Published: 12.25.07, 18:02 / Israel News

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “40 new immigrants from Iran landed Tuesday evening in Israel in the framework of a special Jewish Agency operation. The group came via an unnamed third country and consists of 10 families and three additional people who made the journey alone.

The group will be sent to an absorption center in southern Israel. According to JAFI data, a record number of 200 Iranian Jews made Aliyah during 200, up 65 from the previous year.

Jewish Agency officials said the newcomers abandoned their property and possessions in Iran and left without announcing their intended final destination. Most, they said, have come from Tehran.”

“North Korean Christians celebrate Christmas covertly”
Allie Martin OneNewsNow.comDecember 24, 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The minister-at-large says if North Korean Christians are caught celebrating Christmas, they could face imprisonment or death.

“You’re either executed or taken to labor camps for life [if authorities find out about the celebration],” he shares. “Today we estimate [there are] as many as a hundred-thousand Christians in those labor camps; some people call them ‘death camps’ in North Korea. So of course there won’t be much of a Christmas for those Christians this year.””

SNIPPET: “In the early morning hours of this past September 11, an Arizona man logged into our website, went to our electronic tips page, and reported what he had just seen on the Internet. And we are so glad he did.”

For all those who are so perturbed about the FBI and CIA, this is but one example of why they are necessary and LEOs nationwide need support and encouragement.

Woman caught with bomb under burqa

Afghan intelligence agents said today they have detained in the town of Jalalabad a woman hiding a bomb-filled waistcoat of the type used in Taliban suicide attacks under her all-covering burqa. The agents did not say when the woman was detained.

SWA flight makes emergency landing in Omaha after bomb threat

A person who missed his or her flight in Las Vegas allegedly made a bomb threat that prompted a Southwest Airlines plane to make an emergency landing here on Saturday night, an airline spokeswoman said.

No explosives were found, and the 137 passengers on Flight 1018 continued on to Hartford, Conn., after the unexpected layover of just over three hours, spokeswoman Christi Day said Sunday.
