Republicans Court Rich Candidates
AOL News ^ | November 26, 2007 | Jonathan Beer

Attention wealthy people interested in politics: the Republican party wants you.

As the New York Times noted today, the party that wants people to pull themselves with their own bootstraps expects the same of people running for Congress. It has little choice since The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has raised $56 million with $29.2 million at its disposal compared with the $40.7 million raised by the National Republican Congressional Committee, which as a cash balance of $2.5 million, the paper said.

While having self-funded candidates seems like a dream come true for the GOP, there is a downside. People who pay for their own campaigns will understandably want to call their own shots, making it tougher for the party to convince them to toe the line. Plus, these self-made businessman might not always make the best campaigners because they are not used to the rough and tumble world of politics. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is the exception rather than the rule.

Running for political office also is a lousy investment. Texas businessman Francisco Canseco has already sunk $700,00 in his own campaign for a job that only pays $165,000. Mind you, Canseco probably doesn't need the money y. People who don't need the money of political office may have a more difficult time in understanding the needs of most Americans who do need a paycheck.

This is not surprising, given the GOP’s financial situation.

Hey Republicans!

You’re not getting money (except maybe Bush Pesos) because the average Republican is sick of your amnesty and earmarks and roadblocks on conservative judges and corruption and spending.

You have turned aside the principled causes of 1994 and became just like the Democrats. When will it sink into your elite little heads that we want people with committment to values in office, not self-serving politicians.

Wise up, and you’ll start getting money again.

“Attention wealthy people interested in politics: the Republican party wants you.”

I thought Republicans were “the party of the rich”. Never mind that the richest areas of the nation are largely governed by Democrats.

The leveraged buyout of the GOP, and of our other institutions, continues apace.

Government of, by, and for the people is fast disappearing.

And folks are too busy being entertained to care, or even hardly notice, really.

Once in awhile they may whine a bit about it...perhaps during commercial breaks or something...but that’s about it...

But that said, I fund instead those candidates whom I thing will represent me. The money still goes out, but *I* choose who receives it. It won’t be like the fiasco a few years back when the state party held back some funds to finance an unnecessary move of its office and lost us a critical seat by the slimmest of margins.

Ditto that. I gave to Tancredo (and now Fred, also).
Nada to the RNC!

I see little evidence currently that this is very much true of many now. The people, for the most part, are sound asleep.

I keep getting mail and phone requests for donations here almost once a week. I tell them the same thing every time. “Fix the dang border...then we’ll talk some turkey”.

The GOP leadership has demonstrated time and time again that they are willing to completely dismiss the base on the issues of illegal immigration and fair “free” trade in order to appease corporate business interests. Here’s another example of their desire to retain power by using candidates with their own money to pursue this lost agenda that will ultimately destroy this country if successful.

Or they’re too busy trying to get out of debt, holding down more than one job, or raising their children to pay as much attention as we do.

try saying it this way...every time they call me for a donation I tell them when they start fighting for me as hard as I fight for them then I’ll send them a few bucks...until then they can stop calling me....

Well, I’m doing all those things, and still “paying attention.” ;-)

Citizenship has become passe, having been replaced by “spectatorship,” unfortunately.

Citizenship has become passe, having been replaced by “spectatorship,” unfortunately.

Like sionssar, I've been sending money /directly/ to candidates instead of to the RNC.

I have given a *little* to the RNC whenever they ask me in the name of President Bush, because I still have a respect and appreciation for his work on our behalf. Still, nothing in the amounts of earlier years.

I've been voting in some of the local elections, like the state constitutional issues, etc... 'Still paying some attention.

But Thanksgiving and now are good times to focus on homeschooling, raising the kids and building the family. You do want a solid crop of /future/ citizens, don't you, EternalVigilance? Bringing up good honest kids who just might turn out to be honest judges, workers, teachers, government employees and Presidents?

Don't despair, God is yet able to reserve to himself 7000 men who have not bowed the knee to Baal; if you recognize that biblical allusion...

Still, Congress *must* pass funding for our troops. Oh, that's another thread, isn't it?

Of course I do. I also want them to have a free republic left for them when I’ve got them raised.

No despair here, though. I know God still sits comfortably on His throne.

However, the sovereignty of the citizens of the United States is not so secure. We have a class of elites who have become so arrogant that they don’t even feel a compulsion to pretend that this is still a nation that is of, by and for the people.
