An elderly man was found near an escalator in the store, and police said a young black man was being sought as the suspected shooter. Early indications were that as many as five people may be injured.
Colby Barak told KETV NewsWatch 7 that she was on lockdown inside Westroads Mall. She said she was doing Christmas shopping at Younkers, and an announcement was made that no one would be allowed to leave.
Just before 2 p.m., Barrett said, another announcement was made that shoppers could leave but would not be allowed back in.
Dozens of police and sheriff's cars were arriving at the mall.
A description of the shooter, broadcast over scanners, was that he was in an Army-green vest and was holding a rifle.
Another Westroads shopper, Kathy, told KETV NewsWatch 7 that she heard three pops. She said a Bath and Body Works manager approached her and told her to get out of the mall hallway as there was a situation, and a shooter had not been located.
Ahhh.... I had missed that part of the equation. Now, the talk about the possibility of suing makes more sense. :) I still wish people would realize that it is NOT the fault of the gunowner if an ADULT STEALS a firearm to commit a crime... Lawyers and insurance companies are so horrible in this way — JMHO.
I really have it stuck in my craw about Omaha gun laws. We have a socialist for a Mayor, who tried as hard as he could to exempt Omaha from the State CCW law passed last year. Fortunately, thanks to the 5 of 7 veto-proof city councilmen, he failed.
Omaha is on a record pace for homicides in 2007, and this gasbag liberal thinks the way to solve the problem is more gun laws. The one thing we NEVER hear mentioned about all of these "gun crimes" in Omaha, is how many of the guns were found on the handgun registry.
I jumped through all of their hoops like a good little circus poodle to get my CCW permit so that I can be legal, but it still frosts my butt that it cost me nearly $300 in application fees and mandatory education classes in order to secure a right that the US and Nebraska constitutions already enumerate.
I'm sure Mayor Fidel Fahey will use this tragedy as another opportunity to blame the evil gun.
Shooter was not black, and offed himself as well. 8 dead people, one dead nut job, and at least 5 critically injured. SKS, with "taped" magazines. (Some SKS use removable magazines, either from the factory or as modified).
Funny how these things happen on the eve of great decisions on gun control. In this case the upcoming Supreme Court ruling (not due until around June, but case will be heard much sooner.
Thank you, RDTF... I’m glad someone else sees what I’m seeing.
Conservatives seem to understand that guns don’t kill people - people do, but for some reason a lot of people don’t have a problem blaming this behavior on medications. This kid was obviously deeply disturbed, and drugs do NOT make someone simply decide to go out and commit mass murder one day...
There are MILLIONS of people on these types of medications who are helped, and too small a number of mass murderers to make any statistical comparison meaningful, IMHO.
Very frustrating....
Glad you liked it.
Especially one with the following provision, added in 1986 by referendum of the people, in it's state constitution.
All persons ... have certain ... rights, among these are ... the right to keep and bear arms for security or defense of self, family, home, and others, and for lawful common defense, hunting, recreational use, and all other lawful purposes, and such rights shall not be denied or infringed by the state or any subdivision thereof. Nebraska Constitution art. 1, sec. 1.
The state courts have not yet, since 1986, overturned a single law denying such rights, even though they've heard several cases. Including outright bans on classes of firearms, registration of owners (strictly speaking, purchasers). (Nebraska requires a permit from the county sheriff to purchase a handgun. Of course many sheriffs set up a table at the gun show to issue the permission slips, based on a phone call back to the HQ.)
We’ll never know for sure obviously (unless the police find something in the notes he left, or in interviewing his friends and such), but you very well could be right...
Two magazines, the smaller ones, for the removable magazine version of the SKS or for the AK series.
It was SAC HQ, but SAC hasn't existed since the time of George Bush I. It's the HQ of US Strategic command. The Doomsday Birds fly/flew from there, Various sorts "special" 135 type aircraft as well.
I was assigned there for 1.5 years as a reservist when I was in grad school in Lincoln. Ran out of gas right outside the gate (was driving wifes car) on the day I reported, not a good start.
I've also been in the SAC underground command post, once with my student IEEE group and once as an AFROTC cadet. Had both my pre-ROTC admission and pre-commissioning physicals at the base hospital there. The first one had to be rescheduled because of a blizzard.
But the graboids say the police will protect you, so no need for you to be armed.
Well, I’m not sure *concealed* carry is an enumerated right, at least in the US Constitution. I mean the ‘well-regulation’ of the militia might require its members (i.e. armed citizens) to carry their weapons openly.
I’ve made the point before— ‘carry’ is a Constitutional right (though the original wording ‘bear arms’ seems a bit more euphonious)—if the government regulates concealed carry it must permit open carry, and vice-versa.
This all happened in the area I grew up in. Makes it seem pretty personal.
Prayers for the grieving families tonight.

To me that makes that mall effectively a posted gun free zone to easily cowed and law-abiding concealed carry people -- who might have seen the sign and left their weapon in their vehicle. Maybe hereafter some won't be so easily cowed into leaving their self defense weapon where it won't do them any good in the first several minutes.
And...people with mental illnesses are often misdiagnosed, and treated with the wrong meds. A doc friend of mine told me they rule out MENTAL HEALTH issues by trying drugs to treat it before investigating and diagnosing health issues that can mimic the same symptoms. SICK world it is.
Some were trying to guess the identity of the shooter. I was merely pointing out thru pictures the futility of that attempt early on in the event.
Although Chief Moose continued to have that problem well after the first shooting.
Prayers for the victims & their families. ~Pandora~
“Wasnt it a school playground nearby, too, or have I somehow combined two different crimes into one in my memory?”
I think you are combining the McDonald’s murders with the Stockton, CA schoolyard massacre, where a man took a semiautomatic version of the AK-47 and killed a bunch of kids at his old elementary school.
I was walking to class at UOP and saw the medevac helicopters landing at the school about 1 mile away.
I wasn’t answering your question. Perhaps you should stay off of threads like this.
“If he was white, they’d still be saying white male, you can bet your bottom dollar on that. I wouldn’t fault them for that. It’s the PC nonsense that I object to, not what color someone is.”
Well let’s see. He IS white (or he appears to be in his photo) and the reports I’ve seen so far say nothing at all about his race. And no indication he was Muslim, either. Just another nutcase.
I find the attention to race on FR when these type things happen rather disturbing.
