(Idaho) Anti-wolf group responds to state management plan
The Magic Valley Times News ^ | December 5, 2007 | Matt Christensen

Wolves are on the minds of many Idahoans following this week's unveiling of the state's plan to manage the species if it's delisted from federal protection early next year.

But wolves are in the hearts of the Idaho Anti-wolf Coalition, a group that passionately wants all wolves removed from Idaho.

The group, led by Stanley outfitter Ron Gillette, doesn't trust the federal or state government to manage wolves, which they say are wiping out elk populations. The coalition is circulating a petition to back Idaho out of the recently released management plan and to refuse cooperation with the federal government.

"This is a crisis that's going on," said Twin Falls hunter Tony Mayer at a meeting hosted by the group Tuesday night at the Turf Club in Twin Falls. "This is a despicable situation. It's an epidemic. It's a problem."

The group says any number of wolves in Idaho are too many, and they blame the government for what they call a wildlife crisis.

Also speaking at the meeting was Rex Rammell, a former eastern Idaho elk rancher known for an incident last year when more than 100 of his animals escaped his ranch. Then-Gov. Jim Risch ordered an emergency hunt of Rammell's escaped elk, which led to a showdown between Rammell and the state. Risch and Rammell are both running for Sen. Larry Craig's seat in the U.S. Senate.

I think local residents who deal with this day-to-day are better qualified to decide this than career beaurocrats sitting in tax-payer financed offices.

Actually removing the wolves from the endangered species lists is good for ranchers and farmers. I believe it opens up wolves for shooting if they are caught destroying their property and livestock.

Could be wrong, but I think I remember something like that being talked about when I was a kid. But meh laws change thanks to envirowackos and peta.

This could become a factor in the Idaho Republican primary next year, as Rammell is running for the U.S. Senate and his primary opponent, Jim Risch, ruled against him regarding elk he had on his ranch.

Wolves. like all predators, understand the wisdom of the Guru, Axiom number whatever, which is “When gunpowder speaks, beasts listen”.

Allow the citizens to deal with four legged predators, as they already so do with two legged predators.

Wolves kill elk--hunky dory.

"Indigenous people" kill elk--all is right with the world.

White people named "Clem" kill elk--you never hear the end of it!

If wolves never wiped out elk before, why is there danger of them doing so now?

Reading your quick post I’m reminded of the book/movie “Never Cry Wolf”

I could go for removing them from the endangered species list. I don’t see trying to get rid of all the wolves in Idaho.

This elk rancher isn’t the only rancher who is losing stock to the wolves. Cattle, sheep, goats, chicken, any kind of animals that are raised for our consumption are all prey animals and are mighty tasty to wolves too. Once a wolf has made a kill at a ranch they go back again and again looking for easy prey.

I’ve seen three this year and all were after deer. I’m amazed at their speed and couldn’t have got a gun up if I’d wanted. And I carry one to protect my dogs.

Predator speed is another reason for all humans in areas where rpedators may lurk should carry a “Furball Gun”.

A person on foot has reported a wolf following him at about 15 mile Hot Springs Road. This is not a good evolution of the Fairbanks wolf pack story.
