New York store red faced over 'Hanukkah hams'
Breitbart ^ | Dec 6 2007

Posted on 12/06/2007 11:05:38 AM PST by Gamecock

A posh food store in New York's Greenwich Village has found itself red faced after offering hams for sale with the slogan "Delicious for Hanukkah," the current Jewish religious holiday.

The non-kosher labelling was spotted at the weekend by Manhattan novelist Nancy Kay Shapiro, 46, who decided instead of alerting management to take a picture of the unorthodox sign and post it on the Internet.

"I just thought it was funny," Shapiro, who described herself as an unobservant Jew, told the New York Post. "I wasn't offended in any way. I just thought, here's somebody who knows nothing about what Jews eat."

By the time Shapiro returned to the store on Tuesday, the first night of Hanukkah, the signs had vanished, the newspaper reported.

A manager at the Balducci's gourmet grocery store told the newspaper that the sign was a mistake and blamed it on a stock clerk.

Pork and shellfish are among the foods considered unclean under Jewish law.

I agree. She has perspective, a rare commodity today.

I wonder what would have happened if the sign said Ramadan instead of Hanukah.

This, to me, is some funny stuff.

BTW: Balducci's went downhill 15 years ago.

Oh please. I highly doubt that the store clerk was responsible for having the sign printed.

[Everyone at the dinner table eating Kramer’s lobster.]

MICHAEL: Thanks for the lobster, Kramer.

KRAMER: Rachel, aren’t you gonna have any?

RACHEL: Oh, no, I can’t. I’m kosher, we don’t eat shellfish.

KRAMER: You mean you’ve never tasted lobster?

RACHEL: No.

KRAMER: Wow. You’re so pious. I really respect that. You know when you die, you’re gonna get some special attention.

The sign was pre-printed and meant for other displays in the store. An ignorant or unobservant stocker put it in the wrong holder. They have probably replaced it with a sign saying “Delicious for Christmas!”

This is classic: it’s PC gone amuck. In an effort to be more inclusive, they indirectly stick their foot in their mouth. Frickin’ beautiful.

This would have never happened 30 years ago because non-Jews wouldn’t have given a crap about showing diversity and giving Hanukkah “equal time.” They would have left the Hanukkah stuff to Jews and just observed Christmas themselves.

Many years ago there was a kosher deli in Mission Valley (San Diego, CA) called "The Maven". The shopping center decided to advertise the restaurant with a new slogan on the marquee, "Ham it up at the Maven". Brilliant.

Every time that I see the photograph I am reminded of the true face of Islam. The reason we do not see it here in the States (yet) is that, so far, they have not outnumbered us.

There are a lot of non-observant Jews out there who celebrate Hanukkah but don’t impose any dietary restrictions on themselves. For these people, a Hanukkah Ham is not a contradiction.

Ham for Chanukah makes the NY Daily News
Dec. 6th, 2007 | 09:26 am
There's a brief article about my ham photos in the NY Daily News today! I'm relieved to see I wasn't misquoted.

The photos are now available at my quickie cafepress store on mugs, an apron, magnets, and cards suitable for next Chanukah!

If you run a gourmet food store in Manhattan, you BETTER take Jewish sensibilities into account or you will lose a huge portion of your customer base.
