Funny-- he is viewed by the MSM as being negative when using an opponent's own words to "compare and contrast". I don't view that as negative, but showing an opponent's record. I agree that he should showcase his own attributes.

Fred has a laid back personality. He is not a type A and is not going to be one. He is campaigning vigorously. He has 2 kids under 5. That takes energy!

“A Huckabee/Thompson ticket sounds good to me right now. A good counterbalance.”

It sounds good to me also. However, I’m certain that Thompson will settle for nothing less than being president - I don’t think he would be #2 for any other candidate. Huckabee on the other hand, is young enough that I think he would accept the #2 slot if he substantially agreed with the candidate running for president. I can see Huckabee as being Fred’s VP. However, I can’t see him ever running as Guiliani’s VP, regardless of the conspiracy theorists here on FR think.
:-)

“A Huckabee/Thompson ticket sounds good to me right now. A good counterbalance.”

Counterbalance a real pro-tax-reform fiscal and social conservative (Thompson) with a tax-and-spend in-state-tuition-for-illegal-aliens soft-on-crime populist (Huckabee) who gets endorsements for unions and has bashed top conservative group Club for Growth?

I dont thing so.

Maybe your need a real leader on the ticket with Thompson and not a Huckster.

“Some months ago I asked South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint, a conservative I admire, why he signed on with Romney. He said he was for Romney because he sensed the strength of his values and because he (DeMint) had no idea how badly the federal government was being run until he got to Washington. ‘We need someone who has run something and knows how to turn things around.’” ACU President David Keene, on endorsing Romney

sensible combo?

Not when Tax Hike Mike Huckabee is such a God-awful candidate who is getting NEA and IAM union endorsements, would not even stand with Bush on his schip veto, has a record of large tax increases as Governor, and also a record as being a softie w/ violent criminals and has recently dissembled (lied) about his involvement.

http://taxhikemike.org

The guy has been flubbing simple foreign policy questions (NIE on Iran) and has Willie Horton issues worse than Dukakis -
http://www.arkansasleader.com/frontstories/st_07_21_04/huckabee5.html
- the libs will tag him as a tax-hiking soft-on-crime creationist boob who is unqualified, and take him out easily.

... that is IF we have the misfortune to put him anywhere on a ticket.

Thankfully, Thompson is smarter than that.

I would find a Thompson/McCain ticket far more expected than Thompson/Huckster.

And Thompson/Romney would actually make the most sense for full top-notch team and regional balance.

I'll skip my response on the taxhikemike part for now.

But I'll agree that he needs some work on foreign policy.

His lack of information about the NIE was unimpressive.

And a few weeks ago, he proposed moving the Palestinians to new homelands in Egypt and Saudi Arabia, which is the sort of careless statement that can complicate our current president's diplomatic efforts.

But after a couple of terms as Vice President Huckabee, under President Thompson, Huckabee can get a coherent foreign policy together - and then run for president again in eight years.

Um no. I think your added examples only underscore my point. we dont allow a clueless dolt to be a heartbeat away from the President.

Al Gore excepted.

And I’m worried about this too:

Huckabee is just so wrong, you shouldnt lower Thompson to his level.

Thompson and Huckabee are a good match in terms of policy and political philosophy. They are basically aligned on the issues, although they have different ideas about how to accomplish them. Huckabee's executive experience would be a good complement to Fred's experience as a Senator. Huckabee is relatively young and inexperienced, sort of like Dan Quayle was, but he'll get up to speed quickly after becoming V.P. - and then he'll be the best-qualified candidate for president in eight years. I proposing a 16-year plan here. You can't get that with McCain on the ticket.

In the immediate future, a Thompson-Huckabee ticket will take advantage of Huckabee's popularity with the voters, which is undeniable now. Huckabee performs well in debates, so he will be effective against Hillary's (or Obama's) running mate. McCain hasn't done so well in the GOP debates, so there is reason to doubt his ability to debate effectively against the Democratic challenger.

Having Romney on the ticket would be a liability for a large segment of voters in The South. His presence could push a lot of Southerners into the Hillary camp. And his foreign policy experience is about the same as Huckabee's.

No...that is not the answer. Huckabee does not have strong Conservative principles. I think Michael Steele would be an excellent choice. FRED has great insight and wisdom and would choose a good running mate. Huckabee carries too much baggage and will fall from the polls as quickly as he rose.

FRED THOMPSON (true Conservative Federalist) - NATIONAL SECURITY EXPERIENCE (I’ll do whatever it takes to stop the bastards) - 2ND AMENDMENT ADVOCATE (arm everyone and the criminals will back off) - SECURE THE BORDERS (starve the bastards and they will go home) - LAW AND ORDER (enforcement first and foremost) - SOCIAL SECURITY REFORM (the program can’t sustain itself) - DEFEAT THE DEMOCRAT (any fool they put up) - PING!

I've been watching Huckabee for a long time - even before he entered public office, back when he was the head of the Moral Majority in Arkansas. He has always had strong Conservative principles, just like Fred. A lot of the anti-Huckabee propaganda going around right now is wildly exaggerated and misleading.

My biggest concern is his lack of experience in National Security issues. America simply cannot afford an inexperienced President. Not right now.

His compassion for illegals also concerns me. I have backed President Bush all the way on every issue. However, when he came out with his proposals for a “Comprehensive” Immigration Reform...he lost me all together. Illegals have invaded our Country and we must have a leader who will stand strong on controlling our borders and enforcement of our laws currently on the books. Huckabee would be another McCain on that issue and we just can’t afford that right now. That is a nonstarter for me and I will not vote for anyone who proposes to give “rights and advantages” of any kind to people who came here illegally.

FRED stands strong on his protection of America’s sovereignty and I must support him for that.

I agree that McCain as VP candidate would be a deal-killer for many conservatives.

Too many christians have a messianic view of government. They look to government to save us from ourselves. When you combine his tax hiking, his nanny state conservatism, Dukakis-like approach to crime and Jimmy Carter approach to terror, you’ve got a guy that’s a faux conservative version of Bill Clinton.

I like the energy I’m seeing from Sen. Thompson since we had this discussion. I think it’s helping him.

Yet, the insults have continued, increasing in volume and ferocity to the point that I cannot see myself ever supporting Thompson should Huckabee lose.
