Who's leading the presidential pack in South Carolina? (Huckabee Leads in IA, SC)

WASHINGTON -- Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee has surged ahead of former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani among Republican voters in South Carolina, and Sen. Hillary Clinton is clinging to a slim lead over Sen. Barack Obama among Democrats.

A new McClatchy-MSNBC poll found that the GOP contest in South Carolina is more wide open than the Democratic race, with five Republican contenders bunched within 10 percentage points of one another.

Huckabee is backed by 20 percent of likely GOP voters in the state. Giuliani stands at 17 percent, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney at 15 percent, former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson at 14 percent and Arizona Sen. John McCain at 10 percent.

"With him (Huckabee), it's not a big show, it's just common sense," said Julia Glass, a retired probation officer in Wisconsin who now lives on St. Helena Island. "He's not shifting around. He really sounds like he would appeal to people outside our (Republican) party."

Glass and other South Carolina Republicans will vote on Jan. 19 in the GOP primary, with Democrats following a week later.

Elsewhere among Republican voters, Huckabee has opened a 12-point lead over Romney in Iowa -- 32 percent-20 percent -- while Romney is ahead of Giuliani in New Hampshire by 25 percent-17 percent in the Mason-Dixon polls.

On the Democratic side in South Carolina, 28 percent of likely voters support Clinton, 25 percent back Obama and 18 percent favor former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina, who won the party's 2004 S.C. primary before Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts chose him as his running-mate.

South Carolina Democrats will vote on Jan. 26.

Obama, from Illinois, holds a 37-21 percent lead over Clinton, from New York, among black Democrats in the state. Clinton leads 34-21 percent among S.C. female Democrats.

Democrats 50 or older back Clinton over Obama by a 30-22 percent margin. That could be a key advantage because seniors are more likely to vote than younger voters.

Common sense with Huckabee? Laughable.

Huckabee SOUNDS good. If these polls are true, it really means we’re either a more to the left party or we’re full of surface-driven voters.

You tell me?

Is this before or after they find out Huckabee was a pardon machine for violent felons?

“With him (Huckabee), it’s not a big show, it’s just common sense,”

Actually it is a big show for him too, he just fakes sincerity better than the rest.

“He’s not shifting around.”
No. Instead he simply pretends his previous tax hikes weren’t really tax hikes, his pro-amnesty-for-illegals wasnt really there. etc. he is simply lying instad of doing the principled flip-flop of the more honest newly minted conservatives.

“He really sounds like he would appeal to people outside our (Republican) party.”

Yeah, well that is because is basically running as a pro-life John Edwards. He even got the NEA and IAM union endorsements! Sure, let’s have a economic populist who isn’t even conservative ... that’ll win votes! (sarc.)

Huckabee SOUNDS good. “

If you are Hillary, Huck sounds great. She’d beat him in a walk.

If you are a fiscal conservative, Tax Hike Mike Huckabee is a disaster.

Here's one reason Huck might be winning in SC
"I'm glad people have made the decision not to display it [Confederate Flag] as a prominent flag symbolic of something at a state capital."
-Fred Thompson Thompson's response, YouTube

"That flag is devisive and it shouldn't be shown."
-Mitt Romney Romney's response, YouTube

Thus the capital ‘SOUNDS’. I’m not a Huckabee fan. He’s not the worst. Rudy is...but he’s not the best.

“No we’re full of people that are more concerned that a candidate agree with their particular religious doctrine, or with how charming and folksy they are, than with the candidates positions and qualifications for the job.”

If the polls are right....you’re probably right.

This must be coming from one of the fact-free zones that have been established inn our Republican Party.

If Hucka bee, through some combination of fate and tragedy, did make it to the nomination, the Democrats would take him apart like a $2.99 Tinkertoy set.

I’m getting ready to walk away, something I’ve never done since I was a kid passing out Goldwater flyers in my Chicago neighborhood. This time around the GOP really is looking like the “Stupid Party”. I’ll pull the lever next November, but thats about it.

The real political news here, that everyone on FR will dismiss, is that Rudy is running a close #2 in a deep south state; running #1 in FL, CA, NY, NJ, PA, CT, IL, AZ (!!), and #2 in NH. Any other candidate---Huck, Mitt, Fred---not only has to start huge momentum by winning IA and NH and SC and MI, but whoever loses must come in #2 to get delegates.

Like the electoral college, it's not about winning states, but piling up total EVs (or, in this case, delegates).

Whether you are a Tanc, Fred, or Duncan supporter, I think it is unanimous. Huck is such a spinning LIAR! I would be a FOOL to be FOOLED by the likes of him.

I hope others out there dont make the mistake of supporting this dangerous RINO chameleon. Heck, he is worse than a RINO. He has solid Lib Democrat positions on a lot of things.
