LOS ANGELES, Dec 9 (Reuters) - "The Golden Compass," a $180 million family fantasy starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig, did not meet expectations at the North American box office, opening at No. 1 but with weekend ticket sales of just $26.1 million, its distributor said on Sunday.
New Line Cinema, a unit of Time Warner Inc, had hoped the film would pull in between $30 million and $40 million.
"It's a little bit disappointing," said Rolf Mittweg, president and chief operating officer of New Line's worldwide distribution and marketing operations.

The Weinstein Co. drama "Grace Is Gone," starring John Cusack as an Iraq war widower struggling to tell his young daughters their mother has died in combat, had a so-so opening with $14,000 in four theatres.

In before the “why do you care if the movie bombs, don’t go see it if you don’t like it” post.
Hehehehe....excellent....
They have that sameness we saw in the “only Rooty can defeat Hillary” posts, don’t they?
Quit gloating, just ignore the film.
The Golden Compass lost its way and is now only fools gold. It can only point you in the direction of hell. Keep on the right path.
Was that movie the reason Cusack was on a Sunday talk show?
It wasn’t to rehash the political philosophy of “Better Off Dead.”
Why do you care if somebody posts a “why do you care if the movie bombs, dont go see it if you dont like it post? Don’t read it if you don’t like it.
: )
If everybody had ignored the film, and allowed the studio promotion to go unchallenged, the box office this weekend would have been far different.
Instead, parents were informed and made an informed decision whether or not to support this movie.
That being said, the financial backing for this picture is secure, and our investor is satisfied with the long-term prospects for this movie.
You are just wasting your time decrying “why do you care if the movie bombs?” post posts. The posters will just make it up on foreign distribution and DVD sales...
Tomatometer rates “Golden Compass” a rotten 45%
Like a Haitian voodoo curse, they just won't die, those whose purpose is to tell us that we should not wish ill on a movie whose profits go to a person trying to destroy the basis for all morality and to the studio that funded his colossally horrid work.
Let me proclaim here and now, I wish massive losses on all movies and their backers where that movie's express purpose is to destroy Christianity. There is a distinction between this movie and a typical hollyweird movie made by anti-christians, where their values come out, but which are not expressly for the anti-religious purpose.
LOL.
Grace is Gone is a Dave Matthews song...
they could at least come up with an original title
After other anti-Christian fiascos bombed over the years, you’d think that Hollywood would know better.
Hopefully, this will be the biggest financial disaster yet.
The upshot of the spectacular failure of this movie is that the sequels will never be made. The series has been stopped in its tracks.
Here, here.
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops are leftwingers and have been for years.
"... The dangerous political stalemate in Iraq that blocks national reconciliation finds a parallel in our own nation. We are alarmed by the political and partisan stalemate in Washington, the bishops said in a statement approved at their semi-annual meeting in Baltimore.
The bishops said the United States should work with Syria and Iran among other nations to bring stability to Iraq and should always try to minimize further Iraqi losses..."
"..Last spring, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops--the public face of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States--launched an unprecedented education drive aimed at churches and schools, as well as a lobbying effort in state legislatures and the halls of Congress, to end capital punishment nationwide..."
US Conference of Catholic Bishops appoints woman with pro-abortion ties as policy director...
There is a lot more going way back.
Expecting soon to see an article about how the fantasy genre is dead. They will never acknowledge the weight Christianity still carries in America.
I will be very surprised if I see any article in the MSM about how Christians stayed away from the Golden Compass and caused serious financial losses.
They release it now so it will qualify for the Oscars (the big release will be later).
And Bella — the best Christmas movie yet — is still running!
It will do good overseas..............
For your daily outrage:
It won’t matter that this film bombed, for New Line. THE BRITISH TAXPAYERS bankrolled this film. Of course, they would profit if it did well, too. But it’s amazing what projects can get a green light if the God-hating bastards who make them don’t even have to worry about losing money.
LoL, this is from the Rolling Stone Magazine review:
“The Catholic League thinks its anti-Catholic. Admirers of Philip Pullmans 1995 His Dark Materials trilogy, of which The Golden Compass is the first part, think Chris Weitzs film guts the backbone of the book. Me, I just think it blows.”
“It’s a little bit disappointing,”
yeah. That’s what I heard about the movie.
Right on.....Ignore it and maybe they will get the idea..just maybe, but prob not.
Unfortunately, Bella died a quick death at the boxoffice. It didnt bounce when it went into expansion, and you it’s per-screen average is so bad now ($700 per theater) that I dont think the 400 or so theaters that are now carrying it will hold onto it for much longer. If anyone reading is interested in seeing it and it’s nearby, see it now because you’ve probably only got 2 weekends left.
Juno has a loosely similar theme, in that it’s about a teenage girl who gets pregnant, decides to keep it and goes on the hunt to find the right family to adopt the child out too. It’s a really touching movie, too. If you liked Bella’s ‘heart’ (I cant think of any other way to descibe it), you’ll probably like Juno. It made a mint in limited release this weekend, too.
So the film is set in an alternate world ruled by an oppressive religious authority.
Shocker. Why would I expect that these moron film-makers would do a project with a virtuous religious figure.
Add Nicole Kidman to my list of hollywood cretins who will never see another penny from me.

What? Who's gloating?!? Not me... ; )

For the same reason that NPR continues to exist.
BUT, you will see NON-STOP HEADLINES that it is “NUMBER 1” at the Box Office. That’s all the Gad Hating, death, murder, and destruction loving leftmedia will report... Mark my words...
I don't get it. Big budget, great cinematography, star power - what could possibly go wrong?
“The Golden Compass” is Number One at the box office?
There’s also a concept of “best Kansas City Royal,” too.
This movie looks boring.
On the other hand, I went to see Narnia in the theatre three times. I have never paid to see a movie in the theatre that many times (never more than once) because of the high price. But darnit, it was so magnificent movie with breathtaking special effects. I had to take several to see it.
I know. I have worked nine years at a movie theater in my old home town.
Hey, can you imagine Mel Brooks parodying this movie?
Screen and DVD sells will max at $80 million.
Ishtar! Absolutely one of the worst films ever!
Several years ago my husband and I rented it when almost everything was taken at the video rental store.
Why did they even make that movie? I thought part of it looked like they had intended a musical and then changed their minds. There was some sort of map that should have been the key to the whole thing, but instead turned out simply to be one of many irrelevant parts of a confused and boring plot.
By the time we got through the movie, I HATED both Dustin Hoffman and Warren Beatty! I have never been able to watch either of them in anything ever since.
It may do well overseas, but this movie will do good nowhere...
I am very happy to read reports that the box-office for this anti-God movie have been “disappointing”.
My daughter went to see it, and asked me to go, but I won’t give Pullman one red cent — let him explain to his Maker when the time comes.
