Bloomberg Went Too Far in Gun Sting, Dealers Say
NY Times ^ | December 9, 2007 | DIANE CARDWELL

SMYRNA, Ga., Dec. 5 — In Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s campaign to remove illegal guns from New York City’s streets, he sued 27 out-of-state gun dealerships last year over what he said were illegal sales. Most agreed to settle, while others chose to take their chances in court.

But here, in this town of 48,000 where Julia Roberts was born, the fight has become deeply personal. Jay Wallace, who owns Adventure Outdoors, one of the major gun distributors in the area and a defendant in one of the city’s lawsuits, is countersuing Mr. Bloomberg, alleging fraud, slander and libel. A well-known resident who has operated the business here for 31 years, Mr. Wallace has drummed up support with an online fund-raising campaign, a summertime rally that drew hundreds, and celebrity representation by a lawyer who is a former congressman, Bob Barr.

The Georgia courts have ruled that Mr. Wallace’s suit can proceed here, a decision Mr. Bloomberg’s lawyers have appealed in the hope of having it dismissed. Mr. Barr and his law partner, Ed Marger, said they expected some action on the matter within the next week.

With its 1990s-era brick-paved village green and tidy new subdivisions, this Atlanta suburb is more “Truman Show” than “Deliverance,” hardly fitting the backwater image many New Yorkers might hold of the South. Still, the devotion to firearms and the belief that Mr. Bloomberg should stay out of Georgia’s business runs deep.

Mr. Bloomberg announced the first federal lawsuit, against 15 dealerships, with great fanfare and emotion at a City Hall news conference in May 2006, calling the gun shops “rogue dealers,” “the worst of the worst” and “a scourge on our society,” according to court filings. The second suit, against 12 dealerships, was announced last December. John Feinblatt, the city’s criminal justice coordinator...

Typical of the level of sophistication with which the Times interprets the south. Ugh. All the bilge that's fit to print. I hope hizzzoner gets what he is due in this matter, courtesy of Bob Barr.

The same reason that every news story involving a woman that has given birth at any time in her life, even if it has nothing to do with the actual news story, is called a "mom".

Example Headline: "Kansas City Mom, 72, Gets a Parking Ticket."

The same reason that every news story with a guy that ever served so much as one day in the Marines, even if it was 30 years ago and has nothing to do with the news story, is called a Marine.

Example Headline: "Kansas City Marine, 72, Catches 12 lb. Bass."

Lazy and amateurish writing.

I’m bloviating from South Florida now, but I lived in Metro Atlanta for most of the last 12 years, several years of which were in Kennesaw, home of the municipal ordinance requiring guns in every home. A relatively peaceful and secure place compared to Atlanta or Decatur.

Beat me to it !
What sneering condescending crap, especially as Smyrna is a pretty nice place.
I hope Bloomberg loses bigtime.

Little bit of bias?

“Drummed up support” is another slander.

Our old homestead was in Decatur, no family there at all now, not fit to live in.
NYC liberals created NYC problems, they need to solve them on their own.
I tried to be open minded on Giuliani, but he’s not fundamentally different than Bloomberg, and I want nothing to do with either of them. They put the damn in damnyankee, not me!

I view jury duty as a bore, but I’d love to be a juror on a case of a hassled gun dealer suing that super rich busy body and general buttwipe, Bloomberg.

Why is it that the super rich seem to be Dems? Secret desires to run everyone else’s lives accounting to the fantasy world the reality-protected super rich live in?

Put Bloomberg in a crummy tenament in a bad part of a big city like Detroit or D.C. and let’s see how long he would keep calling for stripping ordinary folks of their means of protecting themselves from urban predators.

Hey, this is our gun store! Right around the corner.

Have dealt with them for years, bought my Cowboy Action pistols from them recently.

They dot every 'i' and cross every 't' in filling out the forms etc. Bloomberg is blowing smoke. I hope AO takes him to the cleaners.

I’m still baffled as to why Bloomers had the right to go WAY across state lines and after gun store owners. Bloomers doesn’t have enough to take care of in his own city?
