Mitt Romney’s Problem: The Liberalism, Not the Mormonism
North Star Writers Group ^ | December 10, 2007 | David Karki

Mitt Romney gave an eloquent speech in Texas last week on the place of religion in American political life in general, and regarding his own Mormon faith in particular. At times the language positively soared, and I’m sure those at the ACLU were none too happy with the omission of atheists and agnostics from it. (As if implementing the state-forced atheism they inexplicably read into the clear text of the First Amendment wasn’t representation enough to satisfy them.)

Correction- Mormonism is not a problem in the Republican Primaries. In the general election, the DemocRATS will come at his Religion hard to turn off minorities and women.

Assuming he is nominated.

In the ideal world we would have a candidate that was a success by taking conservative positions his whole career, requiring a conservative state governor. But at least Romney is taking conservative positions NOW! These other bozos are taking liberal positions now. I would vote for Hillary if McCain got the nomination and I hate Hillary.

A republican will have much trouble in 2008 because GWBush poisoned the waters. He has turned the country more liberal and they want to hear how ending the war and raising taxes on the rich will solve all the county’s ills. All the republican candidates are participating in debates on liberal anti-republican channels. When the real debates take place October 2008 the liberal moderators will trot out all of society’s failures, like with the sub-prime mess, and they will all demand to know how the candidates will solve their problems with public tax money. Remember Bush Sr at the townhall debate 1992?

I couldn’t agree more. I have no problem with him being a Mormon. In fact, I wish he had stuck with his Mormon faith and beliefs while governor of Massachusetts. It’s his flip-flops on abortion and other social issues that causes me to stop and pause.

I don’t care that he’s a Mormon. I do care that he uses his religion to deflect criticism about other issues, however.

What “liberalism”? He grew up having Eisenhower visit with his dad! You all are out of your mind. The argument is like saying GW Bush is a “liberal” because he campaigned against nation building and then he went to war with Iraq.

The proper standard is what are these politicans actions. Romney’s actions like abortion are congruent with his rhetoric. Can you say the same about the election year expedience of Huckabee (taxes, immigration, and crime), McCain (taxes and immigration) or Rudy ( later term abortion)? No. They did on thing in office and now say something more tempered or different.

“But at least Romney is taking conservative positions NOW!”

The fact that he acts like an opportunist means that although he’s taking conservative positions NOW he might just well change those positions LATER.

It is funny that you named all the candidates in that paragraph who, along with Governor Romney, I will not support. This crew as a standard is an intolerable one.

Fred was part of the centrist coalition—does that make him a liberal? And I like Duncan Hunter. And if this Ron Paul....lol.

He did his mission in France, up until ( at some point) he was hit by a car. IIRC, he almost died, but ended up coming home.

“But at least Romney is taking conservative positions NOW!”

And Mitt Romney himself responds, with this self-indictment from the Thursday speech:

“Americans do not respect believers of convenience.”

Such as this obvious “believer of convenience” in 2002...

(before you watch, remind yourself how “pro-life” Romney claims he is now):

RE “The fact that he acts like an opportunist means that although he’s taking conservative positions NOW he might just well change those positions LATER.”

There is always that threat with any candidate but I would rather support someone who was more liberal 10 years ago than someone who is liberal today. Romney appears to have the most consistent conservative positions of the others plus he was a governor. I am not saying I trust him nor have I made a final choice, except against McCain. I would vote for Hillary if Mccain got it.
