COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (CNN) -- A Colorado Springs megachurch instituted security precautions after a shooting at a Denver area mission center earlier Sunday, saving "hundreds of lives" at the New Life Church, senior Pastor Brady Boyd said Monday.

A New Life parishioner acting as a security guard shot and killed a gunman who entered the church Sunday afternoon after he had gotten no more than 50 feet inside the building, Boyd said.

...

Boyd said the female security guard was a hero in preventing further bloodshed, rushing to confront the gunman just inside the church.

"She probably saved over a hundred lives," Boyd said of the guard, whom he said is not a law enforcement officer and used her personal weapon.

...

"Hundreds of lives were saved yesterday because of the plan that was put in place," said Boyd, who put the number of people on the church campus at the time as 7,000.

Third possibility: I might go hunting. But I've always found ambushes to be more economical.

The best defense, etc... ;o)

Guaranteed she won’t be ABC’s Evening News person of the week this Friday ... Charlie Gibson prefers the kind of women who duck and run like the one in Omaha.

Far be it from me to be YOUR critic, but sounds like too many rounds compensating for a second choice weapon to me. If you are thinking fight instead of escape, shouldn't you be thinking more offensive?

My attitude is that which I was raised with, reinforced by my early military training, which was as a tank crewman.

At the age of ten, when an uninvited or unannounced guest came to our apartment door, he was met by my father, with either his M1 carbine or a 9mm submachinegun in hand. And from the bedroom doorway across our kitchenette, I could cover him with whichever weapon he was not using.

as a young tanker, we were reasonably well trained in the use of the M1911A1 .45, and it was the weapon generally used when we stood inspection, or pulled motor pool or finance office guard details. But that is not what a tank crewdawg really either uses a .45 for or fights with, and aboard our M48s we also had a pair of .45 M3/M3A1 greaseguns, a .30 caliber M37 Browning machinegun with six thousand rounds of ammo, an M2 .50 Caliber with a thousand more, and a superbly accurate M41 90mm main gun with 60 rounds in a variety of flavours.

If trouble comes calling, and I can get to my truck, I'm almost as well-equipped as I was back then. And the 30 rounds I've got for my Commander is the same quantity found in a M3 Greasegun [or old Thompson SMGs] magazine.

Your post reminds me of the joke;

Do you know what you call a blonde with two brain cells?

Pregnant

I am reminded of the charge of the light Brigade, Her charging a heavily armed man with a hand gun.Must be an excellent marksman to take him down with a vest on. Neck shot most likely. Hero any way.

In addition to lives saved, this lady singlehandedly DESTROYED any arguments for more gun control arising out of these events, and further laid open the lie of any perceived merit to the concept of “gun free” zones

I'll ping to that.

I really don't understand this trend in this country to hail people as heroes for doing the job they were hired to do. Yes, this woman did a very good job and did save many lives, but that is why she was hired.

The woman was a volunteer, but even if she were not, even if she were being paid like an NBA player, what she did was heroic by any standard. Any standard that is except yours which, it would seem, strips combat infantry of their due respect as heroic because they are being paid.

The last few lines of Family loses 2 daughters in New Life Church shooting; guard 'saved hundreds' has this to say:

[New Life Church Pastor] Boyd says the church will be closed on Monday for repairs but is expected to reopen on Tuesday. "Our biggest concern this morning is not the building," said Boyd. "It's the family that lost two teenage daughters."

Why repair the damage? Personally, I would choose to leave the 40 bullet holes in the walls intact - a good reminder to all church members everywhere that faith can have a price.

I'll rush 'em and do the ash-and-trash shots after I've popped the Claymores.

The handgun is for defense; there are better tools to have in hand for attacking a reasonably well-equipped enemy, particularly if he/she/they is suicidal.

You want me to go attack something, swell. Let me get a couple of pals to take to the party.

I have a KelTec P32. It may be a “peashooter”, but it’s never not with me because it was too bulky to carry while doing X. You can literally put it in the pocket of running shorts and go running.

You know your capabilities better than anyone else, and my money would be on you in any kind of altercation.

That being said, have you ever considered the possibilities now that backpacks have become damn near ubiquitous?

The male victim who helped rush the shooter was interviewed on our local NBC TV news affilate. The quotes come from there. It was then picked up on our local radio stations who have reported it repeatedly.

Perhaps I can find a link for you.

Gotta keep the riffraff away from the Stargate.

I do not understand why everything in this episode must inevitably explode!
