Huckabee Needles New Hampshire
The Stump Blog on The New Republic ^ | 12/13/2007 | Noam Scheiber

Posted on 12/13/2007 3:10:14 AM PST by dano1

At an event for some medical students and faculty at Des Moines University this afternoon, Huckabee went on a long riff about how you need to change cultural norms to bring about changes in behavior. It included the following:

Then the crash dummies came along, and they really helped us to see you know it might be a good idea to wear a seatbelt. Now every state except New Hampshire has a primary seatbelt law. New Hampshire's the only one that doesn't. Of course, their motto is "live free or die." ... I said, "You guys are really serious about this."
Huckabee left town tonight for a few days on the trail in New Hampshire--part of a push to capitalize on what he hopes will be some big mo' coming out of Iowa. But at times like this, you get the sense his nanny-state impulses may be a less than ideal fit for voters in the nation's first primary.

Don’t worry. Mr. Weatherbee isn’t getting within a mile of the nomination.

A propped up stalking horse for Rudy, much like another nobody; Obama for hillary.

Be more concerned that Rudy gets the nomination. - count delegates.
That would pretty much ensure another 8 years of President clinton

The Clintons and MSM want Huster to run against them. Wolffie Blitzer praises Huckabee daily and gets almost moist when talking about him.

She would put on her "southern accent" and it would be all she wrote for the Huckster. Bill would be in hogs heaven talking about the burning of black churches. Yep, they would love to run against the Huckster.

Dane-01, you are the all-time champion of political pimp-posting. (Under all of your screen names.)

But we all know you Dane. Like the Huckster, you can't erase your well-known record as FR's biggest supporter of open borders and amnesty for illegals.

Which is, of course, why you support him. You don't believe for one second in the sincerity of his recent alien invasion "conversion." If you did, you would drop him like a hot potato.

Hillary would look competent, serious, and informed compared to Huckabee.

And since he has an Arkansas ethics stench to rival Hillary's own, the Republicans would lose that campaign advantage as well.

Now, that's scary.

Moreover, Hillary is no longer a sure bet. Obama is overtaking her fast.

Obama wears much better in the smiling glad-handing business than Hillary. the last head-to-head poll I saw indicated Huckabee would lose to Obama by a 2 to 1 margin--the worst thrashing of any Republican candidate.

Huckabee truly believes it's the government's job to keep us from doing things that might hurt us. If he supports primary seat belt laws, will he support sin taxes on candy, restrictions on fast food restaurants, or other intrusions of government into our lives, "for our own good"?

I believe that I read somewhere that despite not having a mandatory seatbelt law, New Hampshire has one of the highest seatbelt use ratios.

Passing a law doesn't automatically insure compliance. For an example, try any of the gun control laws.

ANOTHER DUMB HUCKSTER COMMENT

On foreign policy, he’s an ignorant boob.
Huck is completely ignorant on foreign policy, and when he gabs about it, he sounds like Jimmy Carter. He will be a disaster, and closing Gitmo and stopping waterboarding (which today’s report indicates actually worked and saved lives) is not the toughness we need:

http://www.redstate.com/redhot/dan_mclaughlin/2007/dec/10/nr_on_huckabees_foreign_policy_views_comments_enabled

“This is the kernel of Huckabee’s foreign policy. He wants to anthropomorphize international relations and bring a Christian commitment to the Golden Rule to our affairs with other nations. As he told the Des Moines Register the other day, “You treat others the way you’d like to be treated. That’s to me the fundamental issue that has to be re-established in our dealings with other countries.”

This is deeply naïve. Countries aren’t people, and the world is more dangerous than a Sunday church social. Threats, deception, and — as a last resort — violence must play a role in international relations. Differences cannot always be worked out through sweet persuasion. A U.S. president who doesn’t realize this will repeat the experience of President Jimmy Carter at his most ineffectual.”

A propped up stalking horse for Rudy

A GOOD REMINDER!

Huckster will shill enough votes from the Christians, then sell his delegates to Rudy for a VP slot.

As a result, we will have a double-barrelled RINO ticket. Worst of both worlds, with an incoherent ticket that will stand for nothing and everything.

The Ghouliani Clusterhuck ticket will be the worst combo we could come up with.

“Hillary would look competent, serious, and informed compared to Huckabee.”

Huckabee is incoherent and Jimmy Carter-esque on foreign policy, thinking good intentions is better than Bush’s tough foreign policy. Hillary would actually run to the right of Huckabee on this! ...

“On Iran, Huckabee is at his most troubling. He accuses the administration of “proceeding down only one track with Iran: armed confrontation.” This is false, and the kind of rhetoric you’d expect from DailyKos bloggers, not a Republican presidential candidate. Huckabee thinks it has been a lack of diplomatic engagement that has soured our relations with Iran: “We haven’t had diplomatic relations with Iran in almost 30 years, my whole adult life and a lot of good it’s done. Putting this in human terms, all of us know that when we stop talking to a parent or a sibling or a friend, it’s impossible to accomplish anything, impossible to resolve differences and move the relationship forward. The same is true for countries.”

This is the kernel of Huckabee’s foreign policy.

On immigration Huck is incoherent as well:

“Rich, I’m with David Sanders re Huckabee’s scholarships-for-illegals routine. Laura Ingraham made Huck her “duck of the day” over that answer. It gets to one of my big problems with the guy: his complete philosophical incoherence. Where does Huckabee draw the line on his compassion? When he tries to draw it rhetorically, as with his answer that state scholarships for illegals are a grand idea but federal scholarships would be gilding the lily, he sounds absurd. And in practice, in Arkansas, there were no brakes on it at all: He just got dragged along by the illegal-normalization agenda like any Dem would.”

Yes, once the MSM gets up a head of steam on Huckster, he’ll be spun around like a top.

Landslide loss ... and for nothing, because in the end, he’s just a populist gabber.

Yes, scary.
