Christian Books Requested for Army Afghanistan Chapel Ministry Center (Need Freeper Help)
Self | 10/13/07 | Self

The e-mail below from an army chaplain's assistant was forwarded to me from a trusted church fried. The chaplain's assistant requests Christian books or books with a Christian theme for the Chapel Ministry Center there. Below are some of his suggestions.

Problem is, I don't really know how you would get the books there. If anyone knows how this would be done, please put that information in a Reply below.

Maybe some of us at FR could clean out our bookcases and send some good Christian themed books overseas to our courageous soldiers.

E-mail from Chaplan's Assistant:

Subject: Last minute wish list Date: Mon, 19 Nov 2007 14:20:14 +0000 From: (E-mail omitted for privacy concerns) To: (E-mails omitted for privacy concerns)

Well, at the risk of being shallow and only sending an email when I want something…I am. Sorry. It has been on my heart that we need, here at the CMC (Chapel Ministry Center), books by Max Lucado and other strong/popular Christian artists. PVT Smith recently pulled all of her books from the library, and it wasn't until then that I realised how few religious books we have. We get probably 30-50 books a week that go through here (of which I will pick which ones I want to keep), but it is extremely rare that we get a good Christian book in. It seems to me, as far as a library goes, the number one thing we should be providing are books of faith, Christian living, various religions (including comparisons), and books that help Christians, or non Christians, with their struggles. What I get, book wise, is hundreds of old novels and suspense books. I know it's kind of late in the game, but I would be very appreciative if you guys can maybe get some donations through your churches. We get tons (literally) of hygiene items and snacks, but what we don't get (other than the bibles we have to give out) are items with "meat" that can change lives. I really want that here before I leave. I've attached a list below of books I would really like to have here from Max Lucado (my favorite author), but I know there are numerous other books that would be good to have also. Even if you are not able to do so (I know how busy this season is), if you were wanting to send me something for Christmas, I would ask for one of these books and I will leave it here. A couple of other notes; I believe most of the books listed are paperback. I will be excited to just get the book, but if somebody wanted to go a step further and get it in hardback, I'm sure it would last longer. Also, being that it's a library, devotionals, workbooks, and bible studies don't really work well. Again, I know this is way late, but if it is possible I sure would appreciate it and I know many others will too. The need here for that is really great…and if you still feel like you really want to get me something, I could go with a great big flat-screen TV, hahaha, just kidding. I love you all, and I can't wait to be home with everybody in about two months. If you didn't know already, I should be home, for good, by my anniversary (Feb 7th)!!! I love you all. Thanks for whatever you can do.

If the email is from a valid military email address get with the nearest PA ANG flying unit and talk with their Operations Officer or Sergeant. Talk to the nearest PA ANG Base Chaplain, give him your friends us.army.mil email address so that the Air National Guard Chaplain and he can talk and work the deal for the PA ANG to make or arrange the cargo flight.

Probably, but you’ll know better after talking with the Chaplain.

Actually, there is no “list” per se. I was referring to his suggested authors and book types. He seems to especially like Max Lucado, but I would think even books by authors like C.S. Lewis or books like Lord of the Rings which have a decidedly “good over evil” theme would be desirable.

For women, I like Janette Oakes (can’t forget our femail soldiers). Bodie Thoene also has some good Christian themed fictional books. Perhaps the “Left Behind” series would serve.

I’m not really into Christian self-help books, so I can’t really recommend any authors along that line. As for pastor authors, I do like D. James Kennedy, Lloyd Ogilvie and Charles Stanley.

Good suggestion about the PA ANG. I’ll look into it.

Actually that's what I'm looking for. This reply from SandRat is a good one and allows the person who has books to send to do it on their own without a big, coordinated effort.

If the email is from a valid military email address get with the nearest PA ANG flying unit and talk with their Operations Officer or Sergeant. FYI those in PA - here is the home page of the PA ANG:

Far as I could tell, there are PA ANG bases in Willow Grove, Indiantown Gap, State College and Pittsburgh.

Start with the Bible. Exodus 15:3 “The Lord is a warrior, the Lord is His name.” (NIV) The story of David and his mighty men (2 Samuel 23:8-39), and the story of Gideon’s Army are inspiring (Judges 7). The “Full armor of God” (Ephesians 6:10-20),(Revelation 12:11). Finally, THE KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS “throwdown” of evil in Revelation 19. Bible memorization is a great way to pass the time and “load up” on spirtual ammunition.

What is the status of this? If I have books to contribute, where should I send them?

Thanks
